Have a 4 inch scratch about 8 inches below the handle on my tailgate. Scratch depth is to what appears to be black primer. Do I need to go to the dealer for paint or can I go somewhere like Advance Auto?

All you need is the paint code that's on the tag inside your drivers door jamb. Most all auto parts stores sell touch up paint in little vials that have a brush inside the cap. Advance Auto, Autozone, O'Relly's have them.

I got silver at Advance Auto Parts. They have the exact match if you get your paint color from your truck (inside the drivers door jamb) A 3 letter/number code like 3GA or something like that. They have the small nailpolish size bottles and also spray cans about half the size of regular rattlecans. Remember to get a clearcoat also. Fill in the scratch wit several thin layers of the color, sand lightly with 3000 grit wet sand, apply a coat of clear and sand that flush with your surrounding paint. It wil be a little dull where you sanded - use a good polish/wax and you will have to look closely to find the scratch again. Mettalic paints are harder to fix than regular white or black.

Bought some at autozone. Match wasn't the best. But not noticeable from about 6 feet away.

I just picked up some touch up paint from the dealer for some minor scratches on the door and a nice chip on the hood. Do you have sand it after you apply the clearcoat? You can pick up a small bottle of clearcoat at like autozone?
