    Hey everyone,

I will be picking up an avid bar this weekend that is raw (original paint has been sanded down to metal). I had a few questions that would help save me from making another trip to home depot

Any advice on which kind of rattle can paint would work best? I am looking for a semi-gloss or satin finish so would it be best to buy a semi gloss clear coat?

How many cans would I need to paint the the bar with a couple of coats?

Also, what is the highest grit I should sand them down to??

    Thanks in advance!

trd sport with avid off road light bar, avid rock sliders. OEM roof rack, 12' LED light bar, and Sock monkey decals.
dont know if you have thought about it but i had mine powdercoated for $70, which i thought was a pretty good deal and really not that costly.

but the black with a little grit to it looks best for the spay can. lemme find the name of it

I was hoping to get the same finish as my sliders.. here is a pic of them they are semi glossy. Unfortunately I bought them painted already so I don't know what paint was used..

I believe some have used the rubberized spray coating from rustoleum. Not sure how it has worked out for them though. You should probably use some primer that will work on bare metal before spraying it.

Just whatever you do don't use herculiner. I learned that one the hard way.

Your side bars look like they could have been powdercoated. I just got an Nfab light bar and used rustoleum bed liner from Autozone and it looks great in my opinion. It's got a textured finish that I really like. It's still hanging in the basement where I painted it but I'll get pics of what it looks like later on. You'd need to prime the bare metal before using the bed liner.

I used Rustoleum Truck Bed Liner. It is holding up pretty well & touch up is a snap.

Call a few shops, you might be able to find a better rate (or get to the $70 rate) if you do your own prep. They'll still have to do some minor prep on their end regardless but if you can prep the steel it should cut down your costs a bit.
