I have no problems after removing also, I think that it is part of the pollution control BS, if your state has smog tests, it could be a problem?

if this is true, then why do so many people spend 2 3 hundred dollars on all these other CAIs. wouldn't it make more sense to get the air filter like you're saying? are the gains really the same?

I have a URD on my X. and it has way better response then stock. Instead of just taking out a filter that gives you no gains check into a URD

yea ive read that the URD gives the best gains but, i would rather not cut into the front of the truck. thats why im asking about the box under the hood.

had mine out for about 6 months....
    No problems,
    No gains.

I sorta wish I had left it in a little more protection.

I have seen these "Cold Air" Intakes on the dyno. I know what works and what doesnt. Many people fail to realize that many of these systems do nothing for h.p., and fall into the marketing hype. I have gone face to face with one company disputing their claims, with dyno printouts in hand, only to be told that they claim "Up to...bla bla bla", and that it "Veries on applications". The URD intake has a good gain. The others give, AT MOST, 5 h.p., and in some cases they will LOOSE h.p. Alot of these "gains" people feel are because their engine has lost power at one point of the rpm range, only to come back to near stock h.p. somewhere else. SO, because they "feel" a difference, they asume they have increased performance, when in fact, they did not. If you buy a CAI based on the fact you can re use the filter, then its all good, but if your buying one to get gobs of h.p., you are mistaken.

    X2!!!!

Im running the OEM filter and intake. I removed the charcoal filter to test it, and do some flow tests, and I regret it. Removeing it had no impact on the engine. I have only found a few intakes that will actually give a gian, but gians are small, and to me, filtering is the first priority over performance. The OEM filter, filters the best out of all that I have seen. I havent seen an independant test of the AFE, so I will hold judgement on that until I do a test, or see an independant report. :)

Sound is about the only reason. They might see a 2-3hp gain from a CAI (other than the URD) but you'll never know it's there. All I'm saying is, when I see a dyno sheet proving that it's cost effective, then I'll believe it. Thus far, there have been none (other than URD).

Yeah, it would make more sense to just swap the filter, that's why so many of us have done it. There was a group buy on the AFE ProdryS last year and a bunch of us bought them: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/group-buys/9226-interest-afe-group-buy.html

Edit: Chris responded so I shouldn't have bothered, lol! Better info there. Anyhow, I concur with what he's said. I've seen dynos on other vehicles and the the gains are typically minimal. Some vehicles do have such restricted OEM intakes that you will see decent gains but the Tacoma intake is already a CAI pulling cold air in from the wheel well. How much more can you really expect to get from a CAI?

However, as part of a whole package like I/H/E, it would be worth it.

i was thinking of getting a AFE prodry drop in filter for my truck but i have heard that it lets in more particles in to the engine.. you guys agree? disagree? or so so it does but not enough to really cause a whole lot of harm to the truck??... the main reason i was thinking of getting it was because it is reusable.. one 67 bucks or so and no more filters vs getting a 15 20 dollar one when you wanna change it
