Hi everyone. I have a 2011 Taco with an intermittent whistling/whining noise that seems to be coming from inside the dash or engine compartment.

It is similar to what is described here
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/technical-chat/167287-squealing-behind-dash.html

It takes a higher rate of speed (> 55 mph) to create the noise. Running the A/C exacerbates it, but it continues to happen when I turn off the compressor. The noise is louder if the blower is on high, but you can certainly hear it on the first notch above low.

I cannot tell if its wind whistling through the grill or something related to the blower?

I only have 5K on this truck and want to have it looked at by Toyota service. The problem is that I cannot reproducibly get this to occur. It seems to take the right combination of outside heat (100 today), humidity, moon-phase, wind direction, barometric pressure, and whatever else one can postulate. :D

Any clue? I really don't think its coming from the seals on the windshield but I guess I could be mistaken.

    Thanks in advance

Mine did the same today. I was going about 80, driving home from Arizona. Close to 100*, and it was a loud hum/whine. Intermittent. Almost sounded like it was some sort of wind noise from the hood area. This is the first time I have heard it. I have 8000 miles on my 2011 DCLB Sport. The only thing that has changed since my last drive from AZ is that I just had 5100's installed on the front, lifting the front end less than 2". Not sure if this contributed.

Did you guys ever figure out what the noise was? I just experienced what seems like the same noise on my 2011 DC. I'm sure it was wind noise because it got really bad with the wind gusts.

bump.... anyone find out what it is.

Mine does it when I am on freeway 60+MPH with wind gust. Noise coming from front passenger area.

2011 DCSB with 5100's set at 1.75(not sure if this matters)

I have not yet figured it out. I can say that now that the weather is cooler, it is not happening. I am also noticing noise from the fan when on low. It almost sounds like a bearing.

Perhaps a good push / gust of wind causes the fan blade to spin faster than it normally would? Hence the sound?

Do you have a bug deflector on your truck? Mine was making a whistling noise as well, then when I took it off it was gone. Never heard it again.

No, the blower motor is a common issue. see link http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/28355-blower-motor-squeek-chirp-low-fix.html

2007 with 33000 miles and had the noise for the first time. On the turnpike cruising at 85 mph when it started and it was intermittent. It was windy with gusts of higher speed wind and thats when I got the noise. I thought it might be coming from the gust of wind blowing across the hood creating a humming sound(kinda like putting a bottle up by your lips and blowing across the open top). Haven't had this issue at lower speeds on interstates and only had it on a gusty, windy day.

Are you sure it isn't coming from the windshield? There is a tsb for humming whistling noise due to a faulty windshields seal. Mine was replaced and fixed the problem

It's the windshield seal, and seems to be dependent on the truck's rake. When I first bought the truck, the noise occurred at 85-100 mph. Put on an All-Pro bumper, the noise disappeared. Put a 2.5" lift on, the noise came back.

Have to give that a try...this was the first time it's happened since the truck was new...maybe it's time to get the windshield resealed:D...Ken

Did they not fix the windshield seal problem a few years back? This is 2011. I am quite certain my noise is related to the hvac system. Also, I don't have a bug reflector.

I have a 2011, and my truck had that irritating buzzing noise that I thought was from behind the dash. I did some searching here on TW and supposedly it was the windshield seal. The next time I heard the noise I started to press against the windshield, and the noise changed as I pressed on it. Next I printed out the Windshield TSB, brought it to the dealer, and now no more irritating noise.

I have a 2010 and I had the same issue, started a week after I took it home. It was the windshield seals for me as well. Also intermittent and mostly at highway speeds. Took it back and Toyota had it fixed under the TSB no questions asked.

I've been hearing the same sound intermittently for a year now on my 2010 Doublecab. I heard it the first time I got the truck over 90mph, and it's worse on gusty days and interstate driving (70+ mph), especially with the crazy drafts off of 18-wheelers. I just printed off the link for the TSB from earlier in this thread, and I'm gonna have it looked at. Thanks guys.
