Those wider blocks next to the 3 "fin-like" ribs are the tabs.

To remove the "cubbies" you lift up and out from the top. Yours may have been pulled out straight w/o lifting up ... either a tab (or two) as shown here broke, or possibly whatever the tabs lock into/against, on the backside of the bedside, got broke. That's my best guess. FWIW

They are wired to a mini 40watt amp mounted in one of the storage compartments in the back of the bed.

Pics of the Speakers. ( Cheap Pyramid marine speakers from Amazon.com $15 )

Looks good, thanks for the pics. Not a bad idea. I wouldn't even mind doing something like that and running a wire back to plug an ipod or something in it. Can put the wire in one of the cubbys back there.. Hmmm got me thinking now lol.

    Thanks again for the pics.

you could too, use a hi lo converter and run RCA in to the mini amp, and also have the aux jack for ipod. So you'll be able to listen to either or.

I remember wondering the same thing when the 2nd generation first came out....I was told by more than one toyota employee that the cup things were used by the factory machines to attach the bed to the frame of the truck...seems odd but they do make good storage compartments!!! Lol

Are the cubbies glued in. I tried to remove mine today " up and out " they wouldn't budge. I was kind of wimpy cause I don't want to break one of the tabs.
