UGH Mobil 1 75w90 GL5 Full Synthetic safe in my 5speed?

I have searched and searched and searched. Still unclear if new synthetic gear oils like GL5

Mobil 1 75w90 synthetic in my t-case and manual transmission (2001 2.7) will cause problems? Are the newer GL5 lubes ok to use or should I drain and wait till next week when my four quarts MT-90 comes in? I'm paranoid to all hell because my taco is my only ride and I dont want to drive her (highway and roads) if this will kill the drive-line in a weeks time. Oh god please someone, I'm meltingggggggg

 

Um I've had Mobil1 synthetic gear oil in my TC/Transmission for almost a year and nothing's blown up on my so I think you're all good there.

I also run partial synthetic in my rear dif...all good!

 

That helps def. I still ordered the redline just to be sure. I'll change out the mobil 1 next week for peace of mind.

 

Synthetic GL5 doesn't come with the problems petroleum-based GL5 can cause. You're fine with Mobil 1 but, if you've got money to burn, you can swap it out

 

specs calls for gl-4 or gl-5 so i'd think you'd be fine with any. i'd just stick with the redline mt-90 personally. its in my tranny & t-case and does works well and isn't much more expensive than the mobile 1

 

I've been running synthetic in mine for 3 years now. No problem!

 

ive used the mobil1 75w90 in my diffs,transfer case since i bought my 04. no probs. you wont have any probs with it.

 

I had the same question a while back as you OP... i heard along the way that the GL5 could strip the soft (yellow) metals in the trans. How true this is, I don't know, and no one really touched on that subject. I ended up going with Amsoil 75-90 GL4 sever gear. i know plenty of people on here use gl5 so i guess its ok. I think the manual says gl4 (I COULD BE COMPLETELY WRONG) so thats what i went with

If anyone could touch on the subject of why or if gl5 is bad, would be much appreciated

 

if i remember correctly...some of the additives can eat up the syncros.

 

Thank you all for the informative responses, I'm still weary on the synthetic GL5, in about 24 hours the tcase and trans will be holding fresh mt-90. Hope that smooths out the 1- 2 - sometimes 3; hard gearshifts when things are cold. It sort of improves when things warm up but ugh why so hard to shift? Clutch is good, please don't be synchros......

 

Let us know if you notice a difference with the Redline MT 90 in the transmission. I would be curious as I run Mobile 1 75w90 full synthetic and also have the rough shift on first, second in cold weather. Would appreciate hearing if you think it smooths out the shifts.

my cold shifts into 1st and third suck too. Interested if the mt-90 makes a difference.
The mt-90 made a slight improvement in my bmw 5 speed tranny. I'm considering it for the taco as well based on your feedback.

75w-90 in the front and rear diffs and the xfer case. redline mt90 in the manual transmission. worked great!

 

I should have some detailed feedback for you guys on wednesday late night after I get back from the garage. I'm super hopeful for the Redline products from what I have read. Let's see if they can kill the notchy, not so smooth shifting!

 

Please do, i've ran two different types of fluids in 4k miles and i still can't kick the hard shifts. I'm willing to pay extra for whatever works in these sombitches. Does yours ever pop out of first when cold? Mine does. Prolly the syncros, so i'm looking for something to preserve those muthas.

 

I'm the same man, these transmissions shift so hard, its not natural. Especially for me coming from the world of cars. I think I get angry while driving because I want the shifts to be smoother but the 1 - 2 - 3 in the cold is just not effin' smooth at all!!! I'll have an initial drive report tomorrow late night for you all. Keep in mind, im switching from a weeks old

Keep us updated. I am interested in hearing if you notice any difference now and if not, may be in a couple weeks. It would be a great help to us who struggle with the really hard shifts in 1 and 2nd gear in the cold.
