I'm working on replacing the left front wheel bearing on my '06 4wd Tacoma. The instructions say to remove the abs sensor, but I can't get it to come out. I removed the bolt & have been only able to get the sensor to turn back & forth a little bit. I work it back & forth while putting pressure on the back, but it just won't even start to come out! I even sprayed a little PB Blaster on it. This thing is plastic & I'm afraid that I might break it. Am I missing something?

Does this thing really need to be removed to change the wheel bearing anyway?

I just did my bearings a few weeks ago and one side was a little tougher than the other. You have the right idea, twist it or try to tap it from the inside with the handle end of a screwdriver. It will need to come out if you are replacing the rear seal. Here is a photo:

Well, I got it out.....in about a half a dozen pieces. The Toyota dealer isn't open on Sundays, so I looked up the part on the Auto Zone web site. I figured that it could cost any where from $15 to $45 to replace it. That little plastic piece is listed at $242.99!!!
What the hell makes that thing so expensive?

Well this is amazing......the abs sensor from the Toyota dealer only cost $61 & change. After seeing the Auto Zone price, I expected the dealer price to be well over $300.

Are you serious? For my 99 Toyota wants ~$250. I said screw it. Who needs ABS off road anyway :D

I know this thread is pretty old, but I was having issues taking the speed sensors out of my 05 T4R, I already broke one :(...so with your recommendations I'm hoping I can salvage the other. Thanks for the information, guys!!

I was trying to clean an ABS sensor (2010 Tacoma) after reading the video at https://www.liveabout.com/how-to-clean-abs-wheel-sensor-281744?. I got the bolts out okay but the sensor would not come out. After twisting and prying it just snapped off. Now I have to figure out how to get the broken sensor out of the hole. My inclination is to use a lag bolt and thread it into the remains of the sensor shaft and try to pull it out that way. Any other ideas?

Might have to pull the axle and tap it out from the inside. I broke one a week or two ago the little o ring was stuck by rust.

The abs sensor doesn't need to come out to replace the wheel bearing. I've done a couple bearings on my 06 and never had an issue. Just need to be careful that's all.

Did mine this weekend. Used 15.00 Amazon sensor. Old sensor was stuck. Here's how to get the old one out in about 5 minutes.

Break off the plastic housing out side the knuckle. Expose the inside of the old sensor. Then take a 3/8" drill bit and put a piece of tape on the bill to Mark the length of the thickest part of the new sensor. This will help you drill lot only the first half of the sensor, which is all you need to do to get it out.

Slowly and softly clear out the old plastic sensor. Once the thickest part of the sensor is out the tip of the old sensor will be laying in the smaller channel in the knuckle. Flick it out with an ice pick, hook, screw driver, etc.

Then pop the new sensor in. Should take 5 minutes. Just did it this weekend. Yes be careful not to go crazy and ram the drill bit into the bearing. But this is impossible to do if you use a drill bit the same size as the new sensor (thickest part of sensor where the o ring is at.

Before reading the last few posts I had decided to get an aftermarket ABS from https://www.carparts.com/abs-speed-sensor/toyota/tacoma/2010. The old one had, as I mentioned, snapped off at the knuckle. I devised a plan to drill a hole in the remainder of the part, which I did, and used a hex-head lag screw to insert into the hole, leaving enough of the head exposed to use a claw hammer to pull out the remaining part. It all went well. The aftermarket part was fine. At first the ABS sensor light came on when I first started the truck, but after driving a couple blocks it went off and stayed off.
