Thanks for the info- perfect! That Honeyvillegrain site has some good deals - I found that one but wasn't sure it it is the best. I like the shipping 4.99 for anything.

Just ordered the water filter from Amazon - that is a great one! First item in the kit - besides my guns and ammo which was std already.

Now need to track down some buckets and store some rice and beans - any other ideas? Liked the link to the top 100 gone as well.

do you have a way to cook/heat water?
if you have a propane grill just keep a few extra propane bottles on hand.
a small propane camping stove is nice to have as well.

I have two 5 gal gas cans a 3 one gallon cans that I rotate through for lawn equipment and I'll use the 5 gal cans in the vehicles from time to time just to keep the gas fresh.

    gasoline is a problem.

best i can do is i keep my vehicles filled all the time. i border on obsessed, i have 3 cars and i keep them all filled..plus my work truck (so four vehicles = 88 gallons or so). my truck, i fill up at a quarter tank..my wife gets annoyed.

i have coleman lanterns that burn dual fuel. a generator..i keep 3 propane tanks filled, and i have a cheap propane table top stove with a long hose that connects to the big propane bottles.

you can get free food grade buckets from a decent chinese restaurant. they buy soy sauce in five gallon buckets. wash them, and buy new food grade lids.

My wife and I are working on this too. Mainly after floods up here took out all the grocery stores we shop at for a few weeks. Luckily they all came back, but the floods get worse each time. The entire town closest to us went under to the 1st floor of most buildings so I'm concerned what'll happen next time. We were safe, but will need food, etc.

We're planting a garden to get stuff to can, freeze, and dehydrate. Making shelves in the basement and getting mason jars to store the dehydrated stuff. We also grabbed a vacuum sealing from her mom to do that.

Those hand warmers you just open up to heat up work as oxygen absorbers. They heat up when exposed to oxygen so one of those on top of a bucket of rice or beans with a gamma lid would get all the oxygen out. We have a friend that gets 5 gallon food grade buckets from local restaurants and puts gamma lids on them.

We have a generator and I'm trying to get more solar things setup. I'd like to get 3 months of wood pellets in the basement so we have a stock of fuel to heat the house. Trying to figure out how to solar power a battery backup for the pellet stove too.

Also stocking up on guns and ammo.

I did add those to my "survival" wish list on Amazon though! One thing I want to know is how you know they're working. Obviously if they hand warmers don't get warm, they aren't working. I couldn't get any info on those.

And I was thinking hand warmers are things people might want to stock up on anyway along with other supplies.

what I do is get all my bags filled with food and ready to seal. the 2nd to last step you want to do is add the O2 absorbers. have all the bags ready, cut open the bag that has the O2 absorbers in it, drop a few of them in each mylar bag and then start sealing the bags up.

the next day all the bags should be "sucked in" making it look like they were vacume packed. thats how you know if they work. if you get a few that dont suck in then you either have a bad seal or a bad O2. just open the bag, add a new o2 and reseal.
Ive had to redo a few.

also I bought a bunch of the handwarmers this spring at wal mart. they were stupid cheap on clearance. like 60cents for 2 of them so I bought all they had.

We have a vacuum sealer so we'll probably use that for most small items. Thinking about the hand warmers for big buckets or bins. Hand warmers last a few hours I think so they might be better for large containers like that.

I another note I grabbed an old UPS from work that still holds a charge. I'm thinking I want to chain a few batteries together, tie them into the connection terminal, and do a solar charge kit for them. Maybe crack the thing open and do a "normal" connector on it instead of the proprietary one. Make a rack for the batteries in the basement or something, and run cables to the UPS.
