Christianity is not about being holier than thou. We are all imperfect, yes, even the "holiest" of christians. "All have sinned and have fallen short of God's Glory." In other words, only God is perfect. For example, if we compare our goodness to God's holiness, we are somewhere in the scale of 0 to 100 where God is at infinity. So no one can brag about how good they are, because we just don't measure up. The Bible says that God realizes this, but He requires sacrifice to pay for our sins. So Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice and paid for our sins. It's like The Tale of Two Cities where one person took the fall for another's crime. This sacrifice is a gift to all of us. That includes the "dick his/her whole life" as well as the "philanthropist and genuinely caring person". However, as with all gifts, the recipient has to acept the gift. It's just like if someone offered you a brand new Tacoma, and you say, "No Thanks." and walk away. You won't get the gift. If you want it, you still have to take the keys, get the deed and then it's yours. In your example, the "dick his/her whole life" accepted the gift, and the "philanthropist and genuinely caring person" did not. The gift is still offered to everyone.

That's my two bits. I'll get off my soap box now. :)

Why would the gift be offered to someone that didn't even try to be a good person for their entire life? That person is just taking the easy way in to heaven, they don't really deserve it IMO.

Who am I to question God's generosity. Jesus had a parable about a farmer who hired workers throughout the day to work in his vineyard. The workers hired at the beginning of the day all agreed to work for a day's wage. He hired workers mid-day, as well as near the end of the day. At the end of the day, he paid all the workers a day's wage. The workers hired at the begining of the day complained that it wasn't fair. The farmer reminded them that they agreed to work for a day's wage, and that he was being generous to those who started work near the end of the day. This is similar to you, being a good person, giving money to a homeless person you pass by. One can say he didn't work for the money, so why should you give him the money. You will probably think that you are just being nice to the needy. Well, we are all needy for God's grace.

To answer your question, God sees the heart. Does the person who didn't try to to be a good person really have a change of heart, or is he saying he is turning to God at the end of his life just as a "get out of jail free" card? Jesus was crucified with two thieves. One thief turned to Jesus on the cross, and asked for forgiveness for his sins. Jesus saw the sincerity of his heart, and told him that he will go to paradise after he dies.

By the way, for all those scientists who find Heaven too far fetched of an idea to believe in, think of it in terms of a parallel universe.

Possibly because they were created with more original sin than most people?

yeah, think of it as a fictional parallel universe. We havent been able to find other life sustaining universes but Im fairly confident that we aren't going to find a "parellel universe" where the streets are paved with gold. Think about it, everything in the "good book" is consumer friendly (i.e. be able to see loved ones, gold everywhere, eternal happieness, etc.). For the life of me, I dont understand how people can believe all this stuff. Do people really need to believe in a fairy tail to live happily?
