None of my windshield damage is from following too closely. 90% of my driving is outside of heavy traffic hours so I'm not in the heavy stop and go bumper to bumper traffic. The big chips are from stones and metal studs kicked up at highway speed, usually from the lane next to me and I would say were unavoidable. I would argue that most of the sandblasting effect was caused from highway driving also from all the salt and sand they use in the winter. I don't believe following distance was the reason for the damage. Just 6 years of stones, bugs, salt, etc. Usually if I'm following closely, it's a slow speed crawl and nothing would get kicked up in that situation anyways.
