Was looking to get a set of wheel locks. How many guys use em? Im referring to the keyed lugnuts. Are the factory ones good enough? Or should i look at getting an aftermarket one like gorilla? Thx in advance

They're all pretty much the same - they might slow a thief down for 30 seconds while he gets his extractor socket, but that's about it.

What you DO need to do is get the shitty Toyota OEM lugnuts off that truck before they strip out and leave you with a flat tire stuck on your vehicle.

Just as susceptible, just at a different socket size.

What I like about the Gorilla lugs is at least they don't fall apart with use like the OEM.

Sears sells a very effective $50 Craftsman "Lug Out" socket set that bites into the outside diameter of wheel locks. It works similar in principle to the bolt extractor wolfpack_5150 mentioned, but this one is actually specially designed to bite through the lock's chrome plating.

Gorilla sells wheel locks PN 61631 with a spinning sleeve that resists the extractor sockets. Note these have a conical seat, so don't fit Tacoma OEM alloys.

i don't even bother with wheel locks, i'm on the trail ofton enough and only imagine how much it would suck if i lost or misplaced the wheel lock key while trying to perform a trail side repair or to swap out a flat tire :cookiemonster:

i don’t bother with them at all. they are not all that hard to get off. so it’s not stopping anyone from steeling them. would hate to get a flat and lose the key and not be able to take the tire off and put spare on.

Conical seat works with most OEM alloys. My wheels haven't fallen off yet :D

Huh? Pretty sure the counterbore on the OEM alloy lug hole has a flat bottom. That's why the OEM lugnuts have a washer. Unless the Tundra alloys are different?

If someone wants your wheels bad enough, they'll get them. I have a gorilla lock set just to deter opportunist and punk thieves in the neighborhood. Good quality. Can't complain.

Who wants to steal a $150 wheel with a gawdam 50 pound tire on it? Wheel thieves go for expensive wheels with low profile tires they ca get at with a low profile floor jack.

    +1

This isn't 1968 anymore when wheel theft was a big business in the ghetto.

I've had a lot of stereos stolen and a lot of vandalism. Never had a wheel stolen.

People will steal anything, my friend had a EMPTY plastic 5$ container in his truck an someone broke the window and took it.

To a thief, 150$ is 150$, especially if it will sell.

You knew it was empty, but the thief didn't unless it was open and obviously empty.
Wheels? It's too much risk to try and get all four off without someone passing by and noticing. One, you look like you're changing a flat.
Once you get beyond that, people will call the cops in a heartbeat anywhere but gangland when it's obvious you're removing wheels and leaving the car on the ground or on blocks.

Thieves will go for the quick "smash and grab" where they might score electronics or might get skunked, but there's little risk to popping a window and grabbing anything available.

$150 wheel x 4, with tires, can fetch good money on Craigslist. Hell, there have been a couple of reports on TW of spare tires getting stolen.

    Oh.

    Fresno.

I took my ex wife to Fresno and left her in the car with the door unlocked because I knew someone would steal her.

Long as the conical seat is larger than the bore hole and centered in the lug nut, it'll still work fine...

You'll notice all the lug nuts Wheeler's Offroad sells for 2gen Tacomas are conical seat...
