Oh okay, I gotcha. How is a cord measured? I've heard the term used many times but I've never understood how much wood is in one

    Generally , a cord is 4' x 4' x 8' , or 128 cubic feet of wood .

Firewood is generally 16" long so three ricks ( rows ) 4' high and 8' long is a cord .

Do you guys bring your wood in your house or garage for the winter? I keep mine outside all summer to dry, then usually cover with tarps during the fall and winter. This becomes alot of work when you have to dig it out in the January/February months. I have an attached garage and I am now thinking about storing the wood (about 2 cords) in there for the winter.

    Any thoughts?

I would be a little nervous doing that, depending on what time if the year you did it. Specialy, with an attached garage, you could be bringing in bugs/termites, or god knows what else.

Some homeowners insurance policies will not like you to store anything of fire or kindling wood. I store my wood in the woods, and the fuel logs and or fuels in the shed not my garage. Oz? you cut your own?

I store some kiln-dried wood in the garage that I use for the wood stove. I then have some that isn't kiln-dried that I have out back that is burned once the burn is going nice.

Looks a little like cottonwood, at least that's what I would call it here on the east coast.

I have a mid size vermont castings stove. Its not my primary heat source, but I do use it on weekends to keep the oil burner off. My living room gets HOT so I have a fan to try and blow the air to other rooms and upstairs.

The sides are 25' wide and 36' long and 4' high. The green wood I cut yesterday about a cord of swamp maple. It's been below freezing about 4 times so far winter is on the way.

The math works out to about 28 cords 10 were sold last year (or spoken for) just have not been delivered and 8 for any one who needs wood and the rest is mine. I'll probably do a few more before the snows and after I move mine to the house. I have been known to skid wood with my Skandic snow machine it keeps me out of the bars.

Does that con.ect to a regular fireplace with open front? I've looked into a type that slides in place to an open front fireplace to get more heat and less smoke.

I dont have a fireplace. My stove has a pipe that connects to the chimney, which is just a brick enclosure around a flue pipe.

What you would be looking for is a stove insert, which are almost as awesome, lol. My sister has an insert and they love it! It throws off a lot of heat and much cleaner than a fireplace.

Fire from the past weekend. Obviously this doesnt heat the whole house, but it will warm up the main floor when it gets a bit chilly and I dont want to turn the heat on. Ran out of wood, so Ill have to go up to the cabin and get some more soon.
