Just out of curiosity why the switch tO the soft topper? Not that I don't like it just thought the sungtop was a nice fit. Was it to save weight?

Can you do a write up on how you did your flares? :) I really want to run 35s one day.

I plan on going up again maybe next weekend to explore the Bedord Trail side. The fun spots are not closed off on that side.

There are a couple reasons why I switched:

    1. Versatility. I like being able to put the top all the way down or take it off completely by myself.

    2. Weight Savings. My truck is a bit chunky so I decided that this was one area I could drop some weight.

    3. I can open up the side of the soft topper to access my fire extinguisher, first aid kit or hi lift jack without having to open up the swingout and drop the tailgate.

    I have a couple

Here is the before picture. So you can see how much the stock flares extend beyond my bumpers.

Flares taken off showing the mounting holes.

Cutting the fenders in sections. I was originally planning on molding the top and bottom of the flare together and using the "X" spots as the areas where I would drill holes to mount up the bottom of the flares.

    IMG_1857_d31a6250d0848276c9d70fb1d2e7cca523bb05aa.jpg

Here is the special tool I used to trace the shape of the fender. Like I said, I was going to mold the top and bottom together but that was being a PITA. I still have the bottoms if I ever get around to doing it. For now, I think the flares are working out great.

This is with the trimmed flare mounted and some black edge trim that I bought from Vatozone.

    IMG_1860_097f118d11dbfc4b52295e346e25025d3abd23a3.jpg

The metal fender under the flare I eventually spray painted black and also used the black edge trim on to finish it up.

And how she sits today with flares all done.

you ever do anything to keep those flares on better than with the factory fasteners? saw you ripped them out at least once after the cut...

or did you just snap them back in?

I cut the rears back a little more so the tire wouldn't catch. I actually wanted them to come off fairly easily. I wanted the plastic clip to break rather than the metal to break. I have a stock of clips in a baggie in my glove box. They are cheap as hell on eBay.

As is yours! I like your 4runner. When my son gets a little older, I want to start to build up an old toyota truck or 4runner. Something similar to RussellG's rig.
