Anyone know the size and pitch of the caliper mounting bolt? Apparently the dealership I bought the truck from used the impact on it a little too long and stripped it out..... anyone know what size tip an die to use?

I'm not too sure either, TBH. Mostly toyota uses 1.25 but I've run into a few 1.5 bolts. Don't think once a 1.75 though.

    well... pulled and measured mine. I can tell you they're 1.25 but I'm missing my calipers so I can't decide if it's m12 or m14. ??? and I don't have a m12 or m14 x 1.25 tap or die.

Awesome man I really appreciate it. I'm waiting on a ride to get here where I can go get a tap an die set. I hate when simple jobs turn into a head ache

I apparently need a better set because I don't have either of those guys. I'll probably just buy em individually really.

I know what you mean though.

    Just finished!

The caliper mounting bolt is M12 x 1.25 thread. I used a tap to clean the hole in the spindle. I removed the rotor so I could access the clean threads and make sure my tap wa going in straight. Also I used a die to clean the bolt. Hope this helps anyone that runs into the same problem. Big thanks to maxamillion

Just had the same issue with my '09. Can you tell me where you got the tap and dye set? My understanding is that this is not very common. Got the bolt from the local dealership.

I just had the same problem on the top bolt for the drivers side caliper on the steering knuckle. I picked these up at NAPA. Going to try and do the repair on Wednesday. Anyone ever attempt a Heli-coil?

I've used helicoils many times with 100% success- although not on this application. Make sure to use the proper drill size for the helicoil tap.

If I have the space I prefer the solid style thread inserts (not a "spring" like a helicoil) but they're not available in all metric sizes, and not easy to find locally. I get them from McMaster

Thanks for the info. Another forum said 31/64 inch drill bit for this application. I've got a buddy who has done a lot of helicoils for aircraft maintenance who is going to help me out with this.

That's good, because this is not a location where a 1st time helicoil installer is likely to have sucess. Drilling with that big of a bit and getting it absolutely perfectly straight is going to be tricky. If it ends up even very slightly crooked, the knuckle is junk.

The package, or the tap, or both, will list the bit size. It will be difficult to get the hole straight if you don't do it in a drill press as said above. You may want to consider starting smaller and working your way up to the specified bit size as this will help with alignment. Helicoils are extremely common in aerospace because aluminum is so common.

Appreciate the tips. Was going to attempt to drill while installed, but am going to pull it off and drop it in the drill press. The old bolt is about 7/16" - I am drilling to 31/64" - I think it should be alright, only going up 3/64" in size. Heading over at noon. Will let you guys know how it turns out.
