Hey guys, can you help a newbie out? After searching this forum for pros and cons I have decided to install rear speakers in my 12 Access cab. My question is what is the best route to the rear wing doors for speaker wire? thanks

You have a couple options. I would install an amp and run speaker wire from there. If your going to go to the trouble of installing rear speakers then why power then off of the stock headunit and not get great sound. You can either pull down the headliner to get to the speaker wire for the rears or pull the headunit out and get to the wiring from there. Keep searching i am pretty sure people have used the stock wiring in access cabs to install rears, you might be able to find the wiring in the sail panels, not sure tho

Edit: a pointer for when your searching, not sure i you know this or not but 05-08 access cabs had rear door speakers 09+ dont. Let me see if i can find something for you

Thank you, I am replacing the HU and front speakers, just not able to do an amp at this time. I am going to run new wire and cut holes in the door skins to accommodate rear 6.5"s. just not sure the best way to get back there

Even with an amp you would still have to get rca's or speaker wire to the amp. I would run wires under the sill plates with the factory wiring it's a lot less work than pulling down the headliner. Just my .02

I would pop the rear door panels off & double check for speaker hole before I cut up the panels.
As far as running wires I always ran them from the HU under the dash to the kick panels & under the sill plates. You can do it down both sides & under the dash use zip ties to keep the wires up out of the way.

Eh no luck. I know i have read that someone has done it, i think he pulled down the headliner and spliced the wiring there. There is probably 15 threads on the site about this but i cant find much about wiring. Just to let you know most audio experts will tell you to focus on the front speakers. Rear speakers can improve sound quality when done right but it probably wont be worth it unless you are buildind a seriuos system. I would say do a amp and a nice set of components up front first. Maybe get a 4 channel amp so you have the option of adding rears if you are not satisfied with the sound from a nice set of speakers up front.

The holes are there but there is no wiring. My mistake i didnt realize the OP was replacing the headunit. I assumed he was trying to use the existing wiring from the stock headunit to the overhead speakers and route those to the rear doors. But yes sill plates is the easiest way to go from the headunit.

Sorry OP i thought you were asking a much more complicated question. If you are running new speaker wire it is very easy. Like spruce taco said under the dash thru the kick panels and under the sill plates. The only tricky part is getting the wires through the rubber boot to the door, i used a coat hanger to pull the speaker wire through.

Heres a good write up but its for pre 09 so the wiring is already there

Oh i see what you were saying about the amp, add to the factory speaker wires to run to the amp.I had a brain fart haha.
Yeah if the holes are there I wouldn't cut holes in the panel like op wants to. I always liked to keep them behind the panels for a cleaner look & away from prying eyes.

I meant the speaker mount holes are there. Toyota never changed the door frame but they did change the panels. So the door panels will have to be modified.

Here is the cleanest rear speaker install i have seen on a 09+ access cab

Most guys just use the speaker grill and attach that to the door panel like this.
a4azemuq_251802232fc43d1814b59dafa7f89b49e66bb61f.jpg This is what i will probably end up doing. Check out *********.com, they sell adapters for the rear doors to fit 6 1/2"s in the rear
