The clutch in my '10 Tacoma reg cab 4WD 4cyl is slipping and it is getting worse fast. The vehicle has less than 20K miles with all original wheels and tires. I put an aftermarket tow hitch (Curt) on it but rarely tow anything, and nothing over 1500 lbs GVW (2-place snowmobile trailer with one sled). I first noticed the slippage around 10K miles but it was so minor I didn't worry about it. Now it is much more noticeable; just about any time I accelerate hard I notice slippage in 2nd & 3rd gears. The symptoms include a noticeable smell when exiting the vehicle. I don't think I'm going to find myself stranded on the side of the road anytime soon but I expect to get a little more life from this clutch than 25K miles. This is the first time in over a dozen manual transmission vehicles that I've ever had a problem like this. I am looking to hear from other Tacoma owners with similar situations and their resolutions. My plan is to contact the dealer shortly to see if it will be warranted. Thanks in advance for any / all replies. :D

Your problem is common unless you are just someone who just rides and otherwise abuses the clutch. T-SB-0066-11 issued June 28, 2011 is for the slipping clutch on 2005-2011 4cyl, 5sp. There are several threads about it.

Basically two different types of clutches were put in at the factory: Luk and Aisin. Its the Luk that fails. The Aisin is the good one. Here's the fine print though of the TSB. Looks like Toyota can get out of doing a warranty repair if the vehicle moves at all in any gear.

Here is a quote from the first diagnostic step: "Place the vehicle in every gear position (forward and reverse) and attempt to move the vehicle. Does the vehicle move? Yes - This TSB does NOT apply)"......

In other words, at this point you are going to probably have a hard time getting warranty work unless it completely fails. If I were you I would get the TSB and at least try.

This TSB uses a pressure plate from an earlier stronger V-6 engine and an updated disc, calls for replacement of flywheel with a new one, new bolts, and a different turnover spring at the top of the clutch pedal.

It was like pulling teeth for me to get a copy of this TSB from Toyota. They absolutely would not send it electronically, nor would they send it by mail. They would sent it by fax only. Mine is a very old thermalfax that is barely legible. I can't scan it for you because the quality is so bad.

The deal of this TSB seems to be that it is a matter of getting rid of the LUK components and using only Aisin components. My clutch currently does not slip so maybe I got the good Aisin one?

    Good luck.

The Tacoma HQ article is a good start but it is only a summary, you got to get the original TSB as it lists all the parts to be replaced and their new part numbers, as well as all these diagnostic steps that kick you out from qualifying.
