I have a 2011 Tacoma with the tow package. I never really needed it but I am buying a RV that weighs 3500. It has electronic brakes. There is a "plug" under the left dash. How do I go about knowing what kind of brake controller to buy. Does it need more wiring? A harness? Or do I just plug one in and its ready? Sorry for my lack of knowledge but I really need to be informed.

Generally a proportional controller works the best. The more you slam the truck brakes, the more power is applied to the trailer brakes. Once you get it adjusted to your liking, its easy to forget its even there.

I have first-hand experience with the Tekonsha Voyager pulling a two-horse trailer on my old Ram. Another that is popular is the Prodigy P3.

Usually all you need is the controller and the vehicle specific pigtail. Wire the two together, plug in, adjust and go.

I can't say for Toyota, but other mfgs include the pigtail when the truck is sold new. Might be stashed in the glove, the jack box, center console, taped under the dash, etc.

Not sure about the 11's but my 12' came with the pigtail for the brake controller.

Look in the storage bins or glove box they come with the pig tail. You have to wire it to the controller then plug it into the Toyota plug under the dash.
