That's the way to do it! My buddy made up some straps that are a bit shorter than actual motorcycle straps so we don't have to reach so far for the tightening strap... We always stand out bikes up. They don't bang around that way either.

I'm looking at the Thule hitch mount rack for mtn bikes and I'm curious if this one would be a PITA to put the mtn bike on and off.

    http://www.thule.com/en-us/us/products/bike-carriers/hitch/9029-vertex-4-bike-_-9029#

Does any have this, or something similar? My concern comes from the 3rd picture which has a decent piece of plastic/rubber that hangs below the bar. With the full suspension bikes that my gf and I have, it might make it difficult to slide on and off. I know we have a hard time with her trunk mounted rack. Does any have experience with this?

The bikes in the photo are road bikes, and there is plenty of room under the seat, but with the full suspension mtn bike, the rear shock makes it a tight fight if the tubing is too thick, and/or there is stuff attached below the bar that would hit the rear shock.

It may not be an issue at all with this rack, but I know its slightly painful with my girlfriends putting on and taking off our bikes.

Put one more strap over the rear tire and this seemed very stable. But things will fly out of the bed unless you had a bed extender of have it secured with a rope or something else to a cleat/tie down.

2 Thule racks on crossbars and a Kuat on hitch. Also cargo box on crossbars. The cargo box blocks third brake light, so Kuat rack on spliter hitch and extra third brake light mounted in lower hitch opening.

Which Kuat rack do you have? I have the NV and its awesome, although if i am only carrying one bike I usually use the rocky mounts I have on the bed rails.

I think it is nv, 2 bikes, built in lock and repair stand. Love the rack, but have had some issues. It used to stay on my Tahoe, out in the elements. I had two warranty replacements for rusted, seized parts. One of the wheel holders rusted inside and broke and also the threaded bolt for the receiver tensioner snapped. Now, it is garage when not in use and I use Fluid Film or other to keep all parts lubed.

I have a Rocky Mounts Clutch SD that I love and a TRD fork mount that is a piece of crap. The clutch allows my hardtail to fit in my SB with the gate up and it takes about a minute to load and unload.

I have seen a version or two of what I did, which is install a hard cover and then mount a thule rack on to that after installing tracks for it. All from ORS direct. It even lifts up and stays up with no problem with two bikes fully loaded onto it.
