Hi, and welcome to TW. :)

First, I'm afraid I've got some tough questions for you. Not to come down harshly on you but -

Why would you want to do that? What are you hoping to achieve?

Not to bust your chops - but - I never make a change or modification to my truck without knowing why I'm doing it and why the truck will be better for MY personal usage after I've done it.

Swapping a complete rear axle is a "small-time-pain-in-the-ass." There are worse jobs, but this isn't a "Saturday-morning-before-lunch" job.

Your rear locker makes your truck more capable off road. Our tacomas have so little flex in the suspension that it's much easier to cross-axle them than, e.g. a jeep wrangler, which I've seen easily ascend a climb I had to lock the rear to make, simply because his suspension was more flexible.

The only advantage to a limited slip would be on street driving if you have a habitually heavy foot in corners, when the fully open non-locked rear diff will let the inside wheel start spinning early, where a limited slip would more equally apply traction to both wheels and keep the inner one from breaking free.

But being a habitually heavy footed driver in the corners isn't a great option for an owner of a 6" lifted truck - if your preference is really to drive like that, there are any number of sport sedans that are a lot more fun and more suited to that type of driving.

thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard. your e locker axle is better than an LSD in every way possible. There is no reason to switch. I mean clearly you dont actually use your truck off road because you are even considering replacing a locker with an LSD, but what would be the point of going through all the work?

Why would you even do that I mean if you really want to you might as well just buy a different truck altogether.

Wow major flames on this one! I can understand why someone would prefer to have a LSD over a locker - I deliberately chose an -07 Sport over the OR for that very reason. If you aren't hard core off roading the LSD has some advantages - the traction is automatic, no switches to flip. The traction is available in 2wd, 4wd hi and 4wd lo - as delivered from the factory the 4wd lo is the only option on the OR 4wd (yes, I know it can be modded). If you are driving up icy hills a locker is far more likely to cause a fish tail than an LSD.

Having said all that, swapping to an -09 LSD won't do you any good at all because the '09 and up LSD is an autoLSD design that uses the ABS system and the vehicles brakes to act as an LSD instead of an internal clutch pack. The '09 LSD is quite simply an open diff w/ ABS electronics and it won't work for you. You need an LSD out of a '05-08 Sport.

Also look into a Detroit Truetrac:

David knows what I'm talking about , I do a lot of mountain dirt roads and road driving with my tacoma , fast trails and winter snow runs around the Mountian where I don't need 4 wheel drive , I had an 05 tacoma sport with the LSD rear end and loved it , now have an 07 off road with the locker and I'm constantly spinning one tire , I did not know about the mod you can do with the e locker , dose anyone have a link too that ? As for the rear ends what gearing dose Toyota offer are the LSD rear ends geared diffrent from the e locker ?

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
well, i dont see the reasoning, but ill chime in and help if i can

If i remember right, the elocker and 8.4 diffs will not interchange

YES they are BOTH 8 inch diffs, the bolt pattern on the 8.4 (not 8.4 inches) has been enlarged for whatever reason, so they are not interchangeable also the truss bridge deal on the caps doesnt clear an 8 inch housing

IF your talking a whole axel swap then the gear ratios are all the same for 05 up v6.

One thing that he MAY be looking for is the 8.4 is stronger than the e-locker, for towing or whatever reason maybe hes looking for that. Its not stronger gears, its a stronger carrier. I was for awhile thinking of picking up a couple 8.4 diffs for my 8 inch play truck, because of the upgrades, but the damn thing doesnt fit the housing so i quit looking.

All V6 2nd gens (except the X-runners) have 3.73 gears in the diffs. All of the 2nd gen 4 cyl 4x4's have 4.10's. All 5 lug 2nd gens have a few different gear ratios from 3.15 to 3.5X. Like was mentioned above the sport third member will not just swap into the offroad axle housing. You have to swap the entire rear-end out. Also mentioned above, the 09+'s gain LSD via the electronic Traction control system. Only the 05-08 sports have a mechanical LSD. Although you can always put a trutrac in one of the sport rearends.
