    Serious, good idea!

A friend broke the front end of his Tacoma while exploring Baja... Many, many desert miles from a paved road and help. He called a buddy 400 miles away on his satellite phone, and help came!

    This was in 2003:

Yes to the legalities, I guess I was wondering about covering everything with 2 radios. Did find a legal (supposed to be) vhf marine/murs/frs handheld but not interested in that.
I think I am about to purchase the Yaesu Ft-857D and am trying to dream up some type of mounting where I can simply unplug and move it to use as a base with linear power supply. Here is one way; doubt it is real stable: http://www.mountguys.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=SR33-YAESU&click=21

I flipped my Jeep a few years back in the middle of freaking no where. My Iridium Sat-phone brought me friends and a wrecker. At that very moment it was worth every penny. Without it I would have been waiting A LONG TIME for assistance.

if you transmit on 121.5 MHz in the wilderness, SARSAT orbits every 45 to 90
minutes. this is being phased out, now all aircraft have to monitor 121.5 MHz

VHF radio just means a certain set of frequencies. If you and a buddy were to buy VHF radios, you could talk to each other.

HF, VHF and UHF, High Frequency, Very High Frequency, Ultra High Frequency.

Wave length gets small the higher the MHz ( megahertz)

Amateurs (hams) have radios available that are multi banders that cover a great deal of all the spectrum. Having a License has its benefits.

VHF is used by alot in professions and amateurs, military, Civil Air, Air traffic, Police and so on.
