Ticking noise on startup? 2005 Reg Cab

Just passed 80,000 miles and now I have a very audible ticking noise when I start the truck from a cold start. After driving for about 3 minutes the noise will stop completely and it will not make a mother sound if I start it up again later that day. The weather has been pretty cold lately if that contributes to anything. Should I be concerned about this?

What weight oil are you using. If its as cold as you say I suggest using a quality synthetic oil. Some aftermarket filters have been known to create more valve train noise on initial startups. Stick to toyotas filters for peace of mind.

 

I use 5w-30 Castrol synthetic and I have always used toyota filters an I remind you that I am in Texas, when I say cold I mean like 60 degrees. Lol

 

When you said cold I assumed you meant cold!! LOL Guess you are using the correct oil and filter. Don't know what it could be. Try the mod to the air valve on the driver side of motor. Do a search. May quiet it down some. Keep an eye out for shavings in the oil when u drain. Something else may be going on if the ticking just suddenly appeared out of the ordinary.

 

I will look into the Air Valve, do you have a link to the mod you mentioned, my search didn't bring anything up.

Alright so it has to be something with it being hot and cold. When it's cold, the noise is way louder. When it is hot, I can barley even here it upon start up.

I did it a few months ago and it did seem to help a little.

 

That is for the v6 engine though, not the 4 cylinder. Unless it is similar placement.
