    yea true.

Which would be great too for other situations. Giving people my GPS coordinates. But with a HAM..long as it wasn't me that rolled and i still have broadcast ability...i can literally call my Dad..or someone..pretty handy there..

    The Spot doesn't talk.

Well that makes sense for you of course. One question, doesn't ham run an antenna like a cb? Wbat are the odds youre antenna survives the roll/flop? Although that is where your handheld works as backup.

How well does ham reach out of the mountains? Like when you are deep enough in you start to lose radio even. For the most part I can always get a cell signal by going for a hike up to a higher point in the mountains. Granted given an accident by yourself that may not be an option. I'm not doubting any of this just learning about them from the radio guy. Personally I wish we all would have just got hams in the 1st place instead of cb's...

It does run an antenna, but not like a CB. They frequently survive high speed ragdoll's in baja and still work. All radio is best LOS (line of sight). I have a 5 watt microwave shot that goes 80 miles line of sight. When you start getting into the bowels of the earth, you have to echo the radio waves off the canyon walls (and clouds) to get out. That takes mo powa than a CB can legally squirt out. A cheap HAM has more power than an illegal CB tuned and tweaked, and way more range. HAM are pretty much the same as the radio in your hummer dude, and those work pretty good no?

Good to know about the antenna.

I've only ever used military radios in very flat places. Typically the barren flat desert of Boise. Never had a chance to try one in the mountains.

basically same one i got, i got the uv-5r+

still need to figure out how to set it up and use it though

i thought with some dual channel radios you can monitor CB channels as well, but idk for sure, thought i heard that somewhere.

handheld is good for backpacking as well for emergency contact where cell service is non-existent

Check out HF radio...it's possible to communicate with Russians from Idaho. 3000KM range on low power. It's even possible to use the cell towers...possible to send an email from anywhere...you can freq hop like military radios too...we have one in our office for "emergencies". Like if the grid goes down, I can still do gubment work...they are pretty cool but way more advanced than just PTT.

Our armories have similar radios like that as well so we can still communicate if the grid goes down.

i think it would be a bit of a pain as well. but you know most people who do this hobby use cbs. so what other option is there

We need to make a big movement on here to get everyone to go to HAM. Which sucks since most everyone has a CB already...

cause everyone just got CBs more like..haha

i have no problem running both. Most will have CBs at most meets. Cheap, easy to use, easy to setup. Not called CB for nothing..

But i can think of a few cases where HAM woulda been handy on this last trip..

Not trying to convert anyone to it. Don't need it if you don't want it Mark..or Brady..

Im just saying, im getting one hopefully. Would be nice to have someone else do it too..but not needed.
