Can't beat this deal for filters if you plan on keeping the truck a while. Bid $40 and they'll accept. $4 for filter and a new drain plug gasket for 10 oil changes!

The only way to know for sure is to send the oil in for analysis. is a popular choice. Amsoil also sells kits to send samples in for testing.

I am doing annual (or 15k) changes on my truck with Amsoil 0w30. I am not too far out from my first oil analysis (going to do the first one at the 6mo mark to check up on the oil).

Sounds good man keep us updated! I'm very curious in seeing these results. I'm sure lots of factors come into play here (climate, driving style, etc.)

I'm not sure skipping out on a $40 oil change is a good idea either with a $20,000+ vehicle... I change mine every 5k per the recom in owners manual.

I run about 10k between changes with Mobil 1 EP 5W30. At 344k miles with no major engine issues, I'd say the evidence is in. Mobil 1 FTW !

My 2000 Celica & 1999 Tacoma had 7500 mile oil & filter change intervals. Modern oil in a modern engine lasts a long time. 10000 miles with a new filter at 5000 miles is not unreasonable.
If my engine craps out due to a lube oil related failure I promise I will post it so everyone can make fun of me.

I don't plan on doing UOA's every time - just once or twice to establish what the oil can handle. "Magic" oil isn't that bad..preferred customer or dealer rate at Amsoil makes it about 8 bucks a quart, or $6 for the 6mo/10k XL stuff. Even list at ~$10, so you drop $55 on oil/filter, change the filter at 6mo so you're $60 in for a year, plus a UOA at $25-30 if you want to run one - figure you'd have changed at least three times in there, four or five of you subscribe to the silly 3mo/3k thing that the oil change places push on you.

To each his own, though - personally I'm doing it more so I can see how the oil does than anything else. My last change was cheap dino oil. 5vz doesn't give a damn. :p

    +1

The "universal" 5,000 gradually hit Toyota vehicles on a model by model basis between 2000 and 2005 as the clusters were facelifted or redesigned to include the "Maintenance Required" light.

My '03 Tundra ran 5,000 for severe duty, and 7,500 for normal service.
Wife's '04 Rav4 has the idiot light, and only specifies 5,000 intervals.

And contrary to Jiffy Lube hype, most people do NOT operate their vehicles under "severe service" conditions. The manual specifies what is and is not severe service. It is basically towing, or operation in very dusty environments (off road).

    Posted in the other thread.

Marginally worthless on the Toyota dipstick design.

You have to be able to pull enough oil onto your dipstick to get it to drip into the cup enough to fill it to the line.

I barely got enough (I think, maybe not) out of the Taco. Tester said the oil was toast at 4300.
I could not get enough out of the wife's Rav4 dipstick to even get a drop.
I pulled a sample from one of my jugs of used oil that I haven't taken in yet. No clue whether it's 5w30 or 5w20, no clue whether it came out of the Rav or the Tacoma, or if it is a mixture... the only thing I know is that it is from longer than 5,000. That sample read "8"... due for a change.

When I do my next oil change, likely next weekend, I'll pull a sample from the drain and test it. If the test still shows "10", I'll send a sample to Blackstone and see if something is up.

Would likely take more than a turkey baster... the dipstick tube is pretty long and I'm not sure the bulb would be enough.

I do have a Mighty-Vac for brake bleeding, guess I could use that with some cheap tubing, toss it after one use so I don't cross-contaminate.

Is there such thing as it being too late to switch to synthetic oil? I am at 29,000km or 18,000 miles. I didn't run it right from the beginning becuase of money and because I've heard you should break it in with regular oil first.

You should be fine to switch anytime, I had a 95 tacoma with 130K and switched to Mobil 1 and kept 5-6 years with over 200K and it done fine.

    Any time.
You can switch at 2,000 or 200,000.

The 2.7 comes from the factory with synthetic and 0w20 is recommended by Toyota.

Many moons ago when I was a young man in the Air Force (late 1970's), the Air Force ran a test of a large number of General Purpose vehicles (gasoline powered) that compared the use of synthetic motor oil with conventional motor oil. After a number of years and a given number of miles the engines were removed and torn down. They were measured and studied for wear and compared to each other. The results were that there was no measurable difference in the wear between those engines that used synthetic oil and those that used conventional oil.

The conclusions were that anyone could/should use whichever motor oil they were comfortable with as long as they followed the manufacturer's recommendations for servicing the vehicle. FWIW, I use conventional oil and ALWAYS change filter with EVERY oil change at every 5k mile interval.

Please note I do not have knowledge of all the test parameters and was only advised of the results. Also, all vehicles were serviced per the manufacturer's recommendations and shop manuals.

One thing you could honestly say about the USAF vehicles: They were really treated to severe use conditions! Add to that they suffered the trauma of a wide variety of drivers. It was amazing they lasted as long as they did. But when they went to the salvage yard, by and large, they were really worn out.

I just switched over to M1 this weekend with 5K on truck. I was on the fence for a long time but for 6 qts it was only $21 more than dino oil. I will still change the oil every 6 months regardless of mileage which will typically be 3-4K miles. Overkill.... yes, but they made it so dang easy to change the oil! Plus I installed a Fumoto valve!
