Sweet! So, are they still using the Marlin bearing or have they updated it? Also, which setup did you go with? ...you are going to love the second case once it's in.

They are still using the Marlin bearing which kind of surprised me. They did say that they have heard of the issue but maybe it was a bad batch. He said they sold so many and only a few have had issues. I told him I was up to date on the thread.

With that said after talking to him I still feel comfortable ordering the tacoma built tacoma double case setup with 4.7:1 23 spline.

Quick question, why would somebody order the Built lefty drop geared transfer case? School me on this!

So, here's how I see the trade off between a crawl box and lefty...

With the lefty, you don't have to modify your cab or floor, you don't need another cross member, and you don't have to modify your drive shafts. Basically, you just pull your stock (2.57:1) t-case out and install the lefty(4.7:1). The main drawback is that you still only have 1 low range and that range is now REALLY low. This can be a pain when you're on the trail in between obstacles where hi range is too high and lo range is too low.

On the other hand, the crawl box will let you keep your stock 2.57 low range and give you another box to choose from. In your case, you'll get 2.57, 4.7 and 12.1 ranges (2.57*4.7). So, you can pick and choose exactly how low you want to go at any given time. This setup is also nice because you can run multiple shifter setups that allow for 2wd lo ranges as well. The drawback here is that you will need to modify your driveshafts, you'll need to fab a mount for the new t-case and, if you clock you'll have to clearance your floor. All in all, I think it's worth it!

BTW, if you decide to run a triple stick setup, let me know. There are some mods you need to do on your stock t-case to get it to work...

Man, that was such an awesome spot! I think that was my favorite wheeling trip of all time. Here's a couple more pics

Got to go with the crawl box. Need more gear selection! It's almost like "if you are going to do it, then do it!" Thanks lump for the information.

That's the spirit! I think you'll be way happier going with the crawlbox on an auto trans. Keep me updated as your project comes along!

well..who cares about the fender and hood. You'll be using you 96 one.

But...id bit worried about the core support...id bet it's tweaked pretty bad..

actually just look at the passenger side corner..its totally trashed..

that is part of the cab remember. So..that would need probably replaced..

be prepared to pay a LOT more then what you think..i bet that one goes for 3k at least.

    this is perfect...http://www.copart.com/c2/individualLot.html?lotId=28224333

too perfect tho..probably go close to 5k+

the core support is the front of the truck basically. The part the holds the radiator.

    2012-06-25_22-14-41_382_cb966fb1823e3dca2a0f2d1ec3e61f814b11667f.jpg

So the place that is in front of the cab. The passenger side is totally fucked in that link you posted. Where the head light would go and fender would mount as well as the stock air box, CC, or ABS.

kinda sucks about our cabs..all one big ass piece with the wheel wells, and core support and all.

    be much easier..haha

Not that he couldn't sell the access cab after words too..i mean he'd have to do everything backwards. But it'll be harder to sell a truck with a salvage title and all.

Wow... I thought the cab didn't extend farther forward than the firewall. This is going to be tougher than I thought...

So, this would be the smart man's move. But I'm stubborn and not so smart. I love my truck, but I don't know if I'll be able to find an intact cab for a cheap enough price. Really, I've only budgeted $3000 for the whole project and that is not looking realistic.
    :(

So, help me figure this out, you guys...

Check out this thread. Do you think he straightened out the core support, or cut and welded in a straight one? Man, I want to talk to this guy...

I put a new one in a 01-04 5 lug and it wasn't a bad job, just grind out the spot welds that hold it in and reweld with a new core support.

The truck i did hit a deer and wasn't to hard to straighten where the fenders and core support match up.

Yea putting a new on is is an option.

On the crashed cab he posted he'd have to replace the passenger fender too as it's all tweaked out

I think you guys are on the right track... it looks like he cut and replaced his core support. Here's a quote I found:

"I hopefully will get the passenger A-pillar thing worked out next week, then get the core support changed over to the 97, then i can start bolting stuff back together.... I don't really have the time either... it's just 30 mins here and there... "

It would be a good idea to swap in a 95-97 core support too. Make your girls swap easier.

Finding one with straigh wheel wells too will be tricky or you'll just have to fix those too.

But I'd budget a hell of a lot more then 3000 no matter what.

^I think you're right. I might get lucky on this though. A guy on here contacted me because his son rolled his 96. I wonder if I could grab his core support and mate it to a double cab. Maybe I can get a wrecked double cab for 3k these days and save up to finish the project later on?
