Well bit the bullet and decided that since I finally had the tacoma back from the dealer after the frame replacement that it was time for the tacoma to get a few more ponies under the hood. The auto tranny in the 3.4L double cab just leaves me wanting more especially after driving around an extended cab in a manual. The range of gears in the 4 speed just isn't up to par in my opinion, but then again, this truck is 13 years old.

So onto the list of what was ordered.

Brand new TRD supercharger from trdparts4u.com (I'm located 3 hours from dallas, so this was a no brainer. Plus the price was almost unbeatable for a new one)
    Extra supercharger belt also.

From URD i ordered a set of Doug thorley headers, THY-507-C models to be exact. Also picked up the 7th injector kit, URD Crank pulley, 2.2" supercharger pulley and their tensioner pulley.

And then from elsewhere on the interwebs I picked up a set of NGK Plug wires, new denso o2 sensor and Air Fuel sensor (my air fuel sensor is out, no point in replacing just the one). Also picked up the Magnaflow direct fit cat converters for the front and back one along with the Mangaflow 15811 stainless 2.5" single cat back exhaust system. I realize that I could of went with some weld on cat's and just the magnaflow muffer and been cheaper, but then that would involve me welding and fabricating, neither of which I will have alot of time for. (Plus I'm not much of a fabricator and bolt on stuff is what I like)

Reason for the new cat's is I figure the old ones have 140,xxx on them, and If i'm going to through the trouble of putting headers on, and have to unbolt them, I might as well replace them while I'm there. Plus the bolts are rusted to shit on the connections so I'm not to sure I won't have to cut some stuff off anyways.

Everything should be shipping out in the next day or so and should be at the house sometime next week. I'll post up pictures once I get done installing everything, but I figure this should pep the ole tacoma up a little bit.

P.S. My wife doesn't know I ordered all this yet. Man isn't she going to be surprised!

haha....didn't started noticing when the UPS truck was showing up along with the FEDEX truck dropping off boxes left. But now she won't open up the boxes to take any actual pictures because she doesn't want to get the foam peanuts everywhere. <-- yeah right

Sucks because i'm stuck 6 hours away from the house and won't be home for another 2-3 days to check everything out.

The rest of the stuff is there from URD and Amazon, but they are in regular ole brown boxes so pictures wouldn't do any good there.

I'll post more pics once i get the actual products out.

Nah, no divorce here. She knows better than that. Plus this isn't the first time something like this has happened. Should of seen her face when she had to go with me to Extreme Offroad and Performance and pick up the dmax after having 7" of lift put on with 37's. Definitely not the first time.

This part pissed me off. Didn't realize what this bolt was until I got ready to install the supercharger tensioner. This is the top mounting bolt. Apparently the previous owner broke it off, attempted to get it out, said fuck it and left it. I used a craftsman bolt extraction socket and it came on out. Then i ran a tap through the hole along with the bottom mounting hole just to make sure they were clean.

Top view of passenger side header - I've got to make a bracket for the transmission dip stick. It has to be relocated about 3" farther out than stock. The bracket that Thorley provides with the kit is a joke. It's a flat piece that's no where near going to work for anyting.

Where we had to cut and weld flange on for front cat. Can't see it in the pic but I also added a bung for a wideband o2 sensor on the cat. There was enough room after the flange but before the honeycomb material to put one.

And shits and giggles, this is my cousin's 09 Pontiac G8 that he had a lifter or something go bad in. He's changing the cam and having the heads worked on.

    IMG_0613_fc788bb4968a6ef1634a10671f82c973bc26f9d9.jpg

As far as the install on everything, it all went pretty good. I will say that the Toyota instructions aren't really all that great. They don't go into detail on some stuff in a way that I think that they should.

For starters, there is a washer that comes in the kit. No where in the instructions does it say to install the washer on the bottom bolt of the tensioner, but it mentions where it goes on the parts list.

Some of the vacuum lines aren't really explained or pictured. (Which this wouldn't of been as big of a deal except my cousin was pulling the stock intake and manifold off while i was working on the cross over pipe on the headers and the exhaust. Then when it came time to put the supercharger on he was no where to be found. Racked my head for a couple of hours on making sure I had all the vent lines right and double checking stuff. I'm pretty sure they are all correct.

The header installation was a major pain in the ass. The passenger side was a cake walk. Cousin got that side. Driver said doesn't have any room. Some bolts you get to from the top, others from the bottom. And the cross over...have to jack up the transmission in order to get it out. Once all that was out, the thorley headers bolted right in. The driver side needed some love to get in spot and you pretty much have to remove the top studs to get it in there. There might be room, but I wasn't fixing to fight it. And then tightening the bottom 3 bolts on bottom...prepare to have skint knuckles.

Magnaflow exhaust went on without a hitch. The clamps on the muffler didn't hold tight enough and there was an exhaust leak. Went ahead and welded up it. Doesn't sound like it's leaking but time well tell. I haven't ran the truck much since I just finished it up, but i'll double check for leaks in the next day or two. Tone of the magnaflow is great. Just enough rumble without the drone. Although the supercharger takes over in the sound department once boost is building.

The URD kit went in without a hitch. Wiring was a piece of cake and the box fits perfectly behind the passenger side kick panel. I'm assuming it's working considering you have to cut/splice into some of the ecm wires.

Overall, I'll have to say I'm impressed. I've only driven the truck about 12 miles from my cousin's shop to my house. didn't really romp on it to hard because i don't have the AFR or boost gauge in there, and I'd like to be able to watch to make sure that i'm not running lean while it's boosting before i'm to hard on it. I'll have to report more later on how the performance is as far as maintaining highway speeds up inclines and how it downshifts and all that good stuff. I do know by the seat of the pants feel just from cruising around the motor doesn't sound like or feel like it's struggling as much on inclines, nor is it downshifting as much. Going to be make a 120 mile round trip tomorrow that will put it on the interstate for a few miles. We'll see how it does then.

My AFR and boost gauge will be here on wednesday. I'm also going to change the trans fluid, all the gear oils, add the trans cooler and motor oil in the next day or so and give it all new fluids. After that, it will be time to drive it for a bit until i have time to get the trans valve body modified. That will probably be the next step.

If there is anything in the pics that yal can see that needs to be addressed please let me know. First one of these I've installed so I wanna make sure I got everything right and didn't forget anything.

Here is a link to the album that has more pics of the engine compartment.

Did you add another front O2 sensor, or do the headers delete the factory one? I need to do my DT headers sometime. I'm debating if I should just wait until I do my clutch and do them at the same time.

Yeah. We added a second o2 sensor bung. You have to cut the stock front one off when you cut the flange off the cat and weld on the supplies flange from Doug thorley. But they have replaced the sensor hole on the cross over pipe for the front o2 sensor. I just added another one because I'm fixing to install the innovate motor sports o2 sensor.

Looks like you bought some great stuff! I would highly recommend getting your valve body reworked on your transmission from IPT or Level 10 in order to save it from failure and get better performance out of it.

That's one of the next plans. Gotta wait til i get the truck back in north dakota and when I get a chance to have it down for a week i'll pull it out and send it off. I'm pretty sure i'll send it to IPT and let them work on it.

Air Fuel Gauge and boost gauge will be in tomorrow. Going to see what kinda numbers they are throwing out there to make sure everything is doing what it's suppose to be doing.

The only thing that I have noticed, the supercharger is louder than what i expected. the chatter you can hear at idle is louder in the cab than outside the truck. Weird.

Any concern that the URD crank pulley does not dampen crank harmonics.

Just asking because I'm gathering gear to do nearly the same thing but the crank pulley is one piece I'm planning to leave stock.

That was a concern but so far I haven't noticed anything as far as vibration coming from it. I also had my cousin drive the truck and he didn't mention it. As far as if it's worth it, hard to stay since I done everything at once.

I wish on the 30 minutes. We worked on it for about 10 hours the first day (9 am to 9 pm with about 2 hours worth of going to town to pick up some stuff and lunch) and I spent about 6-7 hours on it the next day. If you had 2 competent people working on it diligently, you could probably get everything done in a day. But I did run into a few snags here and there. One being the top mounting bolt on the tensioner pulley. Had to run back to my house to pick up the extraction kit to get the bolt out. There were a few nuts and bolts that i ran a tap/die through/over just to clean some of the threads out.

Also put the exhaust on, found that it leaked...took the clamps off, tacked it in place, had to pull the whole thing off and then weld the muffler up.

There was a bunch of little things like this that really add up in time that may not be necessary, but make for a better install. I also spent a few minutes here and there just looking things over to make sure i wasn't forgetting to hook something up, or left a socket/wrench somewhere.

I also changed all of the oils, drained the coolant, and fixing to do the transmission oil cooler tomorrow along with changing the tranny fluid. All in all it would probably take a full weekend as long as you didn't run into any snags. Also only had me working on it the 2nd day so that made things go a little slower.

I may dyno it one day but it probably won't be anytime soon. More so because i'm fixing to have the truck back in north dakota so I'm not sure when i would even have it home again. Once i get the afr and boost gauge hooked up, and if it's running real close to where it's suppose to be with no issues, I honestly probably won't worry about the dyno just because if it's running right, then it's good enough for me.

One thing that I have noticed, the power increase is nice throughout the powerband, but it seems like after 3300 rpms it REALLY comes on. Only problem is the tranny is wanting to shift out of 1st and 2nd a little to early. i'll get some exact numbers but they are pretty much shifting right around 3800-4000 so that makes it to where it doesn't stay in that sweet spot long enough. Hoping the valve body mod from IPT will remedy this. I haven't noticed any transmission slipeage and again, had my cousin drive it, who has drag raced vehicles all his life and he didn't notice any either. So i'm assuming that the transmission is good to go.

Another thing, and I might have to ask gadget on this one, is that when you are cruising around 70-75 mph, and give it just a little gas, say from 2100 and gas it to 2300 rpms, there is a pulse noise coming from the calibrator that i have placed in the passenger side kick panel. Is this normal? is there something that maybe I didn't hook up right. as soon as you get the rpms up to around 2500+ you never hear it. but i'm almost positive that it's coming from the hard plastic boost line that runs into the urd AIC controller. Maybe someone can chime in on that one.
