AX-TOYUSB-2 adapter - how to connect?

Hi,
I have installed the complete new sound system in my 2012 DC (HU, amp, speakers, sub, steering wheel control interface) and enjoying it since last weekend. The last thing is to connect the factory in-dash USB port to new HU rear USB connector, and I don't need the AUX connector on the in-dash USB module. I have ordered

Metra AX-TOYUSB-2 adapter as it seems to me cleaner solution than the modified USB connector described in the other thread.

The AX-TOYUSB-2 adapter has the same connector like the in-dash USB module and they don't fit together, so has anybody found how/where to connect the adapter to? I had no luck through google, but based on positive reactions in this product review on Crutchfield web it seems people found some connector behind dash where they managed to plug it in (not sure what Toyota they refer to). That would indicate the in-dash USB module will use factory wiring and the adapter will be connected somewhere else into wiring. Any idea?

It just plugs directly to the back of the unit? Better yet can you take photo's of what you are talking about? Also what head unit are you using that requires that specific usb adapter.

I have that USB module (1st and 2nd picture in that thread) in my 2012 DC but instead of making that USB modified cable as they do there, I bought the AX-TOYUSB-2 adapter. The adapter has standard USB connector on one end which plugs into HU (no problem there) and the other "brown" end should go to that USB module and that is where they don't fit together.

 

I used the Metra USB Adapter:

AX-TOYUSB and it plugged directly to the grey USB harness that plugged into the factory HU.

 

OP, based on what I see of your model and the issue you are describing, I think you do not have the correct wiring for the

The adapter goes from the HU to the factory USB wiring. If I remember right, the 2012 had to have the TRD Sport option to get the factory USB port in the truck. Seeing that you have an SR5 listed, I do not think that the necessary wiring to properly use the adapter.

Correct me if I am wrong, but that's what I remember from when I started truck shopping.

 

My truck DC SR5 came new with the factory USB port and it was working with the factory head unit. I took the picture of the factory head unit, adaptor, and the USB module. It doesn't look like that any connector on the factory unit is the same as on the adaptor, so the factory corresponding wiring will probably not fit. I sent email to Metra, will see if and what they reply.

 

AEmedic: your adaptor is listed for 2013+ models, but do you think it is the same connector as the top one on my head unit?

 

After looking at the back of your radio I would say not, the plug for the USB on my truck looks much like the blue plug on the back of yours. It is the grey plug:

 

Sounds like you have the wrong adapter cable. I just installed a new stereo and originally bought the TOYUSB-2 from "sonic craptronix" based on what they told me. The cable is incorrect. I called up Crutchfield and the correct part for my truck (2013 SR5) was the TOYUSB. Got the part and everything clicked perfectly.

Got response from Metra: "The unit does not plug into a harness behind the factory radio, as this would have to be plugged into the vehicle's Multimedia Interface ECU"
And so now I am searching where is the Multimedia Interface ECU

I found it! And...it works!
I found same color brown connector behind the glove box completely on the right side plugged into what is probably the Multimedia Interface ECU. Pulled it out and plugged it into the

AX-TOYUSB-2 adapter and the other adapter end is plugged into HU's rear USB port. Worked right away.

 

FML I was just struggling like a bastard to try and figure this out.. Gave up and ran the USB cord pioneer gave me to the glover box.. Now I'm I'm going to rip it all apart again tomorrow to do this again! Lol

I plugged the adapter in that same Pioneer extension USB cord first to check whether it works and didn't rip the whole stereo out. As it worked I left it behind the glove box with the extension cord. It actually looked like the adapter might be short to reach all the way between stereo and that brown connector.

 

Ya man thanks I was thinking the same thing about the length to cause it's the far side behind tr glove box.. I will do the same.. Maybe these companies will give some better instructions with this thing in the future..

 

Thanks to OP to figuring this out, just installed and its work. Now, needs to find out how to install the factory mic to aftermarket stereo. Lol.

As per the OEM mic, I ran across this document in my conquest to beat the USB connection. You can locate the mic connections there.

I installed a 2014 nav into my 2012, and I tried to figure out how to maintain the factory usb functionality. If you find this, you need the cable above and the cable from the 2014 hu to a usb and you should be set. I will come back and post pics and confirm functionality.
