Looks like you have this setup pretty dialed in. Which shackles would you recommend for me to lower my rear end a little bit? These defined extended length ones are too long and I am a little too ass high for my liking.

i went from the 1" xj shackles to the stock length defined shackles and i like how that turned out...

i was lucky to have 2 sets of ATO mounts which allowed me to move my upper mount back...

the first set was too far back for the dakar leaf packs, so he sent me a new one which moved it forward to compensate for the shorter leafs..

the Toytec BOSS leafs are longer than the Dakars which required me to move my upper mount back to keep the stock length shackles in there..the XJ shackles helped to fill that gap with the more forward mounted ATO, but i wasn't getting full motion, so it was a waste..

so if you have ext. length shackles now, with good angles at ride height, you'll need to get a new upper mount, pushing the mounting point toward the rear of the truck so you can run shorter shackles..

been a while since i've seen your angles...

does your shackle drop straight down on full droop? are you closer to a 40-45* at ride?

you can also look into XJ stock length shackle options if you wanted to play with some cheaper shackles while you dial things in

i believe the ext. length defined is equivalent to the 1" lift XJ shackle

I would love to get a set of the stock length defined ones but $$ that I don't have comes into play then...

If I were to change the mounts that would be a bunch of grinding and re welding I think which wouldn't be necessary.

I haven't had a chance to play with the setup and look at full droop but here is the ride height with ext length shackles7ybynapu_5c26f1d484b86b3f44aafe6f3b77f2b2d9acc3ed.jpg

So I would be looking at the no lift XJ shackles for temporary use?

my concern would be the ride height angle if you went to the stock length without moving the upper mount.

the spring will push the shackle back and ride at a flatter angle...i'm no expert, but from what i've read, you want to aim for the 40-45* ride height and vertical on full droop

Thanks Bob. I think the ext length I have on there now are going to be fine, I just dont like the huge rake is all. I guess it will go away at least a little bit when I get a bedrack and rear bumper though...
I will check and get back to you, might take you up on this

    Thanks again

It's a combination of things. The shackle length should only be long enough to account for the lateral change in length of the leaf spring between droop and compression (full spring arch to flat spring). That said, the farther forward you move the pivot, the longer the shackle you will need to accommodate full spring travel. In addition, as you move the upper pivot forward, you will actually decrease spring rate. Contrary, the farther back you move your pivot, the shorter the shackle you need and you increase spring rate. The angle of the shackle at ride height is somewhat subjective, but in the 40's is a good starting point.

^this guy understands the headaches of leaf spring tuning :D

change one thing, 3 more things need to be changed

which is different than what the link i posted above says..

but i had the same mindset that you stated..the further forward the upper mount goes and flatten that angle, the softer the spring rate...while more near 90 the stiffer the spring rate

Goddamnit. I need to stay off TW till I have coffee.
I knew what I wanted to say but said it back asswards. The image above is correct. Reason for more spring rate as you move the shackle forward is it flattens the spring out the farther forward you go (and also lowers ride height). Leaf springs have a progressive spring rate (well most of them) and get stiffer the more compressed they get...or something :goingcrazy:

if you flatten the spring out, you get more into the stiffer compression rates in the progression...

on a scale of 1-10, 10 being further along the compression cycle and stiffer in the progressive spring rates..

a 90* to the plane stated in the picture above would be in the 5 range...further you flatten the spring, you move it along the compression cycle in the 5-10 ranges

makes sense, but how many shackle setups do u think actually function "correctly". meaning the angle of the shackle and spring length?

so with that said^ what number would u assign your leafsprings Bob? since the they are at negative arch at ride height? lol :stirthepot:
