So, I've long felt my '05 DCSB 6-speed revved higher than it should and tended to lug (if that makes sense).

I didn't want to hijack this thread, but it seemed to confirm my suspicions.

My truck runs at the following speeds in the listed gear at 2,000 RPM:

    > 4th gear - 40 MPH
    > 5th gear - 48 MPH
    > 6th gear - 57 MPH

My gas mileages is OK - just under 18MPG. I just hate to go much over 65 MPH on the highway because the RPMs just seem too high.

I haven't the foggiest notion what would cause this. Any help is appreciated.

No it doesn't make any sense, how can you be overreving & lugging at the same time,?? also what are you doing in 6th gear going only 57mph?? This is not good, last thing, the Tacoma manual trans. is kind of a pile of shit, crappy ratio splits, just never seem to be in the right gear, not to mention the clutch assemblys is absolute shit, theres a member here thats already qualified for full truck replacement & is getting ready to turn it back to Toyota Motor Company in about a week, should a got an automatic , thats all i got for ya...

Have to disagree, my 09 6sp with stock size tires runs about the same rpm. At a true 67 mph from my ScanGauge I see about 2500 rpm. No idea was 4WD means about 6th gear at 57 mph, I'm usually in 6th by 45 mph.

I don't know about the lugging, but I disagree too. You can run in 6th gear at a suprisingly slow speed. I know at 75mph on the highway, I'm running between 2,700 and 2,800 rpms, which is ridiculous.

Your truck is running at the proper speed for the rpm if all stock. I am not sure what you mean by lugging it. Personally unless towing I do not use 3rd or 5th when shifting and I shift at 1500 rpm and my truck does not lug so I do not know why yours would at those speeds.
Lugging is caused by not enough RPM for a given load, not too much. On today's automatics it is almost impossible to lug an engine, but standards can be lugged. For instance if climbing a hill and you step on the gas and the vehicle still slows down or is struggling to maintain its speed you are on your way to lugging the engine and you need to downshift.

Thanks for the input - poor choice of words "lugging" I think. I'm just not sure how to describe it. I guess at highway speed I feel like it needs to shift again because the RPMs are so high, but there's no 7th.

I really wish Toyota had put the .79 ratio for 6th gear that the FJ has instead of the .85 they use in the Tacoma. After all, if you're towing heavy, you probably should be in 5th (or lower) most of the time.

I agree. First and reverse is a little too high and 6th is a little too low.

i have '05 with automatic, but at highway speed its over 2000 rpms, about 2400 or so, at 90 above 3000 at 100mph about 5000 rpms (give or take) and at about 117-120mph about 6000 rpms, thats the max i ever pushed it, so even though different transmissions it sounds about right to me.

    cheers,
    disco

PFFFT! You had me at 90.

Not even sure I've had the truck to 80...

There are some possible alternatives if you want to spend the money. One is find a standard from an FJ and use that tranny if it will fit or swap the gears from it in 6th if they will fit or have some made. The other is to change the ring and pinion, but that will change every gear range which may not be suitable for first and reverse. The last thing possible is to put taller tires on it, but that too changes every gear range.
