Nice! I'm running the exact same. Did you order from Jenson?

I cracked my chainstay the other day... Riding a dang XC trail. Luckily Kona sent me a replacement for free and I'm not the original owner. I didn't realize how nicer new bearings would feel.

Damn, thats some solid customer service. When I broke my Transition I still had to pay the price difference between the old one and the new one.

Had a chance to get a few rides on my new 29er…I have officially drank the kool-aid :D I now understand why everyone raves about 29ers and how fun they are to ride.

Is hearing "chain slap" normal on bumpy down hills while not pedaling?

    Sorry for the noob question.

I did have to pay shipping both ways, $20, and the new stay was used but I can't complain! Its in a lot better shape than my old one was anyways.

Depending on your chain tension yes its fairly normal. If you're running small - small on your gears you'll get a lot more. If you don't have one, get yourself a chain stay protector such as the Lizard Skin one. It really quiets that slap down.

Short answer, yes. If you are doing a really rough section of trail you most likely get chain slap. They make rear derailleurs nowadays with a clutch system that keep the chain tension tight to prevent or at the very least mitigate the amount of chain slap you get.

On my freeride bike I just took an old dead tire tube that I had lying around, cut a 12" piece out, cut it length wise, wrapped it around my chainstay and secured it with zip ties. If you want a less ghetto, more expensive alternative there are several companies that make neoprene chainstay protectors.

Edit: That yellow Yeti has a black chainstay protector, just as an example.

Use the piece of inner tube like you mentioned and then wrap with hockey stick tape instead of using zip ties. It looks way cleaner.

Thanks for the info! I'll have to see if I can find an old tube or wait till I blow one out.

Here is mine, a 2013 Trek 3700 Disc

It's in storage right now, so I don't have an actual picture of it but I bought it right after I got back from Afghanistan. I'm hoping that I get orders to somewhere I can use it after I finish my year in Korea...

Thanks for your service and nice bike :D

make sure to check the tires and cables before you ride it. Concrete has a way of fubaring tires and cables stretch over time

No worries, I love what I'm doing in the Air Force so I'm a career man for sure! :D

I plan on going over the bike and doing a full tune up when I get to wherever I am going. I am actually very worried about the tires and cables, like you said storage units aren't the best place for them. I would have brought it with me, but I have heard and seen a lot of bikes getting stolen here and after spending almost $1,000 on this one (after accessories and the bike) I didn't want to take that chance.

Nothing to worry about. Replace tires/tubes if dry rotted and cables stretch from use, not sitting and they are very easily adjusted. If you are anywhere near Houston area, bring it by and I'll dial it in for ya no problem.
