    The biggest thing is choosing AMD or Intel CPU's and a motherboard with the same socket.
    And choosing hard drives with the same data cable type (Sata, Esata, Sata2, Etcetera)

    AMD and Intel battle is a waste of time. One will be better for a year or so then the other will be better.

    I've yet to see one just truly outperform the other just based on CPU power.

    Current laptop has an i5 and it's done great so far. My memory is the weak link.

    The more I mess with video editing the more I'm wanting to build a desktop again...

    I use an ASUS laptop has a 3rd gen i7, 8gb of ram, an nvidia 740 and 1tb hard drive. It does everything I've ever needed it to with ease, mostly gaming but some video editing. I can max must games it will just get pretty hot.

    As far as Intel vs AMD they both make great products and they are pretty much tied.

    The downside to my laptop is that the Nvidia/Alienware software that controls when to use the integrated graphics or external gpu has a hard time working with any program other than games.

    There are other programs out there that people have made to pretty much ignore the integrated gpu but I've done enough custom stuff in the past that I don't feel like messing with my only computer haha
