OFFICIAL 2nd gen 4x4 front differential bearing vibration thread

Outer diameter is 1.6 in. Inner is 1.4 if I find the time I'll post pics of the tool I made.

You will have to replace the CV shaft when you do the bushing. The genius engineer at Toyota that replaced the 1rst generation bushing with a needle bearing didn't account for the lack of room, so there is no inner race on this needle bearing. It rides directly on the cv shaft. If you replace just the bushing it will help, but the wear is on both parts. $100 shipping included if you buy the Cardone cv shaft from e-bay. Great deal! (better if you didn't need it though!) Buy a new differential output seal too while your at it. Cheaper to buy with the ecgs bushing then at the dealer.

Hey all here is my removal tool i made.

Simply a nice sized lag bolt. I took a piece of flat stock 3/4in wide metal and drilled a hole in it, then with a file squared it off and elongated the square so that the piece could be angled to fit through the bearing. I also had to bevel the back edge so it would fit in flat. The extra washer behind the plate and head of the bolt is just there for extra support. Then simply a big piece of aluminum to span the outer case of the diff.

Installation of the tool is easy, just angle the main piece slide in and pull on the bolt to seat everything, put piece of aluminum on and start tightening the nut... pulled the bearing out very easy and no damage. Best part of doing it this way, is you are not sticking a piece in the diff hoping it wont fall in.... the piece can never fall in as they are all captured by the end of the bolt.

Same issue front diff. At 76k miles. Front wheel bearings were replaced at 60k. I really hope everyone has complained to toyota about this 1-800-331-4331 as of 8/13/14 they have no record that there is a problem with the Tacoma's front diff. or wheel bearings. However, George from south east toyota enlightened me that the rear diff has issues as well. I received the run around from Dave Edwards Toyota in Spartanburg SC and was hung up on twice "while being transferred" never was able to speak with that service tech. This is my first and last toyota.

 

I am pretty sure as long as I can swing a wrench a dealer will never touch my truck unless they pry it from my cold dead hands.

That being said.Once I did the ECGS bushing and sorted my driveline angles out a bit better the truck drives great and the cv play at the diff is gone.I did slightly modify the suspension.Not my first time doing that so I did expect some consequences.

 

What steps did you take to make the drive line angles better? Also is that necessary on one with just a 3 inch lift.

 

Its not a bad design... just not a design that is meant to be changed (IE by lifting)

 

I work with a fellow that has a bone stock 2010 taco same issues no lift. Driver side wheel bearing and front diff issue. He's like myself no off roading just back and forth to work.

 

Update on my ECGS bushing, After 30,000 on the bushing, I changed the oil and it was clear as when i put it in. Still quiet as can be.

 

Thanks for that update! I was wondering if anyone had a ton of KM's on it. Mine has only 560 km's.... so far so good. Hope to report back after 100,000.

 

I just did the 30,000 mile front, rear and transfer case gear lube change and noticed my drivers side cv joint is very loose. Up and down and in and out. Mine is stock with 32000 miles and haven't even had it off road yet. That's bullshit. Calling the dealership in the morning to have it "fixed" until I'm able to get that other bushing. I love this truck but some things are just straight up shit.

 

Great! Keep us posted. I've been waiting to see WHEN a Baja truck would have this problem since they are lifted by the factory, and because of that no way they can deny the issue. I assumed there is nothing different with the front Diff. but I want to know for sure.

 

Well here's the update, the dealer looked at my truck today and said that was the normal amount of play. He said since the left side shaft is so much shorter than the right side it needs the extra play to compensate for wheel travel. I think not. Now I don't know if I should keep on them about this or just buy the aftermarket bushing on my own. It would be nice to actually be able to use your warranty. I didn't get the result I wanted on the drive line vibration TSB either.

 

Dealer ain't going to do shit... Buy the 60 dolla bushing and be done with it.

 

See I have this same thing. Cv axle seem loose a all hell. But......I have not had any vibration issues or wear on the cv axle. ( I tore a boot offroading). No fluid leaks either.

I have been up and down this thread for a good year and a half and I am still waiting for this vibe so I can jump to the replacement. I actually acquired an ecgs bushing from an offroad buddy that lost his truck to a fire. Still no vibes/issues no bushing change. I've had the truck lifted for about 3 years.

 

i have a suspicion. Do you have aftermarket UCA's

I think that with a lift, aftermarket UCA's dont require the LCA to be at its extreme ends of adjustment which makes it to where the track width of the truck is just a smidge wider causing the pressures on the cv to change JUST enough that vibes dont happen.
