Slight vibration, sometimes...

At highway speeds i get a slight steering wheel vibration. But it only happens occasionally. I had problems getting them balanced but finally went and got a road force balance. I'm wondering if it could be anything else besides the balance on the tires. Maybe even a bad tire? Please help!!!

 

So do i but it's because my wheels have the wrong backspacing.lol

 

Forgot to mention. Stock size tires on stock wheels with stock suspension.

 

When they road force balanced the tires, did they use the lug centric adapter? If not, they still may not be balanced correctly.

 

They did. I mentioned that too them too. I think there may be something wrong with the tires. They had to use more weights than usual but said it was nothing to worry about...

You wouldn't need the lug centric adapter if you have stock wheels. Stock wheels are hub centric and the Road Force Balancer is hub centric. You would only need the lug centric adapter if you had lug centric wheels to correctly balance out the wheel on the RFB.

 

Stock Toyota wheels are lug centric. I don't know why. They seem like the only company that does that. At least the 16" aluminum wheels are, I don't know about the steel wheels.

If I have time tonight I'll take a wheel off and double check, but I could swear when I rotated my tires last month the wheel would not center on the hub with out at least two lugnuts installed. I've been wrong before.

I was told that the alloy wheels are somehow hub and lug centric. Don't even know if that's possible....

 

So you had the RF balance and did it or didn't it fix your problem?

I have the same problem but on a new 09 from day one.

 

You maybe on to something. I just took my center cap off and noticed the gap between the wheel and the hub is very small. Maybe less than a mm. So technically they are hub centric IMO, but the lug nuts still center the wheel which would make them lug centric. Now I'm just confusing myself. Maybe a Tacoma expert can chime in. Chris where are you?

 

Road force balance did way better than anything else but I still have a little vibration every now and then. I think I may just try a whole new set of tires... FRUSTRATED!!!!

 

Yea it's a really confusing topic that has been beaten up, down, and sideways in different forums from what i read.

I have aftermarket wheels, which happen to be lug centric. I had issues after my first and second rotation. The third one i had them RFB, fixed my issues.

For the OP just to make sure it's a vibration and not a shudder/wobble right.

 

Shudder may be a good word. My steering wheel just shudders every now and then. It's nothing major like before the RFB but it is something that's bothersom. The problem is that it doesn't happen all the time at certain speeds. What would you do??

 

I mean you had them RFB. Maybe try having them RFB w/o the adapter this time, but if it still persists after doing that, then i don't know. What speeds are they occuring at, 45-60 mph? Hmmm....this may not have anything to do with it, but are your rotors good?

 

Yeah. Rotors are fine and the only thing that has changed since then is the new tires with an alignment. I may just live with it. I'm tired of dealing with these clowns.
