2012 Tacoma double Cab factory vs. aftermarket options

    2012 Tacoma Supercharged and 1970 Toyota FJ40
    Fox shocks, TRD Supercharger, leather, wheels/tires, exhaust, audio.... etc....etc
    I have a 12 Tacoma (non Entune) and I believe I want to replace the head unit and replace it with a double din Kenwood or Alpine unit to include DVD and NAV features however have a few questions.

    1. Will I lose my aux input and/or USB input in the truck?
    2. Will I lose steering wheel controls for the unit?
    3. Is it possible to use an aftermarket head unit with XM and still use the factory antenna for XM?

    What other do's and don'ts.? Looked for vids or DIY how to's however saw allot of older mod replacements vs. the 12 model and up

    There are programmable converters that will allow you to keep using your factory steering wheel controls and the XM satellite antenna. Costs vary depending on the manufacturer and some of the modules for the steering controls are a SOB to program so make sure you do your research.

    I've heard of guys doing some fancy wiring to get it to work with certain aftermarket head units. If the back of the unit has ports for USB and Aux cables odds are you can wire something up to work. Otherwise plenty of units have there own USB port on a remote cable or on the front of the unit that you can use as well.

    Otherwise installing a double din is pretty easy. There's plenty of examples on here of how to take out the stock head unit and the install will be straight forward. As always do the wiring right the first time and you shouldn't have any issues. Remember that most GPS units require an Antenna to be mounted. Under the dash is a popular place for the GPS antenna.

    Also keep in mind your factory bluetooth handsfree microphone won't be the pickup for the head units handsfree so read a few reviews on each units phone operating features to make sure you can keep that feature at least as workable as the factory unit was.

    I've used the PAC SWI-RC on my truck with a Pioneer HU and the Metra Axxess ASWC-1 with a Alpine HU in my wife's car - I much prefer the Metra product. The PAC requires a resistor, where the Metra did not. It appears the Metra requires a resistor some Kenwood head units that are incorrectly identified as JVC. If you don't go with Kenwood, then the Metra is a much simpler install.

    I ditched my aux input and kept the USB with this tool. Not sure if it will work on the 2012 models. Simple plug n play for my 2013.
