AX-TOYUSB or AX-TOYUSB2 w/ Tundra USB/Aux Port

My home-made USB adapter worked okay for a while, but I think I've bent it one too many times from putting in my heated seat switches near it. It's very problematic now.

I found threads talking about them, but nobody says for sure which works. Some mention plugging those adapters into a plug behind the glove box which is definitely not what I need... I need a male USB to the port on the back of part 86190-0c020.

Anyone know for sure before I just bite the bullet and order both to see if either one works?

AX-TOYUSB on my 2013 and it works perfectly fine. I don't remember exactly how it was installed, but I'm pretty sure I connected the adapter to the cable end that would connect the factory head unit. What I mean is it does not connect directly between the aftermarket head unit and the USB jack itself. The factory cable that connects to the USB jack was retained.

I haven't tried that Tundra mod so I don't know how much disassembly of the factory USB jack is required. If it's irreparable damage and you can no longer use the old factory cable, then I'm not sure if this adapter will work for you.

You know more about what was done to the USB jack so trust your judgement.

 

So maybe there is no such cable. Since my truck didn't have USB from the factory, there is no harness for it. So, I was looking for a male USB to whatever proprietary jack the Tundra USB jack in the dash has on the back of it.

I didn't damage any factory cable. I have a male to male USB cable that goes from the headunit to the dash jack that was modified to fit it and that isn't working so well anymore. Too much bending back and forth I think.

I can modify another and replace it, but was hoping for something that was plug and play.

 

can you get a new oem jack and use it with the aftermarket adapter?

 

That's what I have. The jack is OEM. Used in later Tacomas, the Tundra, Rav4, etc.

I'm trying to get a cable to go from the headunit directly to the jack. No harnesses in between.

 

ah gotcha now. i wonder if any toyota parts places will sell the factory cable.

 

I just assumed anything Toyota would have would just have a proprietary connector on the other end as well.

You may be better off trying to re-do the Tundra mod with a new jack.

 

I ended up cutting apart another USB cable and spending some more time on it to make a new one that was hopefully a little more durable.

Didn't have another M to M type A cable and they're unusual enough where I wouldn't find one locally so I cut my existing end off and spliced them together. Didn't think it would work, but apparently you can splice a USB cable if you need to in a pinch.
