I purchased OEM locking gas cap and Security Key spare tire hoist (looks like the locking wheel stud nut)

The gas cap failed to open at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. The cover just turned without extracting the cap itself. After much fiddling, I was about to drive a screwdriver through the whole mess, when the key cylinder popped up enough to be removed. It seems turning the ckey too hard to the left when opening the cap caused the problem. After a few days of using a screwdriver to lock and unlock the cap I decided to replace the key cylinder and try it again. Its been ok for 3 years now.

The Security Key spare tire hoist is an ongoing problem. It's impossible to get the special key to engage the hoist without getting down on your hands and knees and using a flashlight. You take note of the relative hoist components then insert the key blindly because it bolcks your view at the crucial mating operation. This will be fun in rain or snow or mud. I'm still working on a fix for this.

    Some stuff...
No problems or complaints with mine and it's been on about year. The key is tricky but not a show-stopper IMO.

No money, all went to truck...
my salesperson gave me one when I bought the truck. He told me to try not to use it because it might trigger the check engine light. Haven't had to use it.

Here in Hawaii there were a few incidences of people punching holes in gas tanks to steal gas. I would much rather they siphon it out than do that.

    +1

I've had mine for over 2 years with no CEL issue ever. Works fine. Takes about 3 seconds more to open.

Been about 3 1/2 years for mine , had one CEL which was my own fault for not closing it tightly , no issues with the cap I didn't create myself

You could just spend a couple bucks and get a locking assembly like used on any cabinet or toolbox to lock the gas door. You just need to make a slot into the inside of the gas door cavity for the latch to turn into when in the locked position. I've done this for a lot of my vehicles in the past because locking gas caps fail too often in my experience.

The secret there is to not piss people off. I have never had anything put into my tank. No need for a locking cap.
