    Hi All,

i am looking at buying a new tacoma (2015) in the next few months and wanted to get some advise. i am looking at a dual cab 4x4 but not sure which package i should go with. i will use this as my daily driver but also want to be able to do some off roading (nothing extreme yet as i will be new to this as well). i plan on doing aftermarket upgrades in the future but should i start with the TRD off road package or just the base 4x4?

    Thanks!

Just a couple of thoughts. My 2014 SR5 base DCLB is my second Tacoma. My first was a 2003 DCSB TRD off road. I thought it rode too stiff for my use. I do occasional off-roading but this is to hunt, fish, bird-watch. No extreme or rock climbing rough trail etc., etc...
So this time I purposely did not get the TRD option. My base SR5 is perfect and I've had it on rough dirt and gravel roads several times. It's a little more giving; not so stiff. I like the ride better and if you do much highway the Long Bed rides considerably better.
If you're doing serious off-road then the TRD is worth the money; no question.
***note: ***I wouldn't buy it for the TRD badge. You can add those for under $50.

I have the TRD off-road package on mine and I have used some of the features several times to get out of "situations". I don't rock climb or any of the serious off-roading that comes with that, but I do put the truck in compromising situations like mud, loose sand, steep grades, unimproved trails, etc. If you plan on doing aftermarket upgrades like skid plate, shocks, lift, and so on than I don't feel like you're getting any value out of the off-road package because you will wind up replacing these OEM parts. However, with the off-road package comes the added benefit of a few extra drive controls.

Reference this post for more info on drive controls: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...-controls-trac-auto-lsd-trac-rear-locker.html
