Windows restore-stuck

Help from the windows gurus:

Had issues with my windows desktop randomly restarting or giving me a blue screen and locking up. Decided I would try to restore it all the way back to factory conditions using the restore disks I created in 2011 when I bought it. Now, it's been stuck on the same step (disk 2, updating your system) since about 10am this morning.

Ideas besides taking a sledgehammer to the POS? This is why I went Mac on my laptop, had these kind of issues on nearly every Windows computer I've owned (had antivirus on it too).

Hard reboot

 

Tried that, now it won't get past the startup screen. says windows is not installed on the computer. tried in safe mode and now its stuck on a solid black screen with the giant cursor.
