I need to be able to load my Ducati 1098S in my '13 DCSB so that I dont have to have the tailgate down. My thought is that I can do as this guy did in this post below (see pic) and remove the tailgate, wrap it in a blanket, slide it under the bike. The reason is that with the tailgate down it hits my trailer.

Long term, unfortunately I think I am going to look in to a full sized truck and sell the Taco. I love it, but I think it is the best decision for my family (wife, 2 kids, 90 pound lab, plus the '24 trailer).

However, this weekend I need to pull the trailer and get my bike in the bed.

So has anyone else angled their bike like this? I PM'd the guy, but he hasnt responded. I am pretty sure that is a DCSB, but can anyone really confirm? His SV650 has within 1" wheelbase of my 1098S so I would think mine would fit well like that too.

Plenty of dirtbikes get loaded that way. I don't see why it would make a difference with your sport bike. Ive only ever loaded my FZ8 with the rear wheel on the tailgate, though

good pt. OR only came SB. good good...

Thought about it, but I dont see the plus. It seems only risky that if it hit, or the stress of the bike pushing hard against it strapped hard might cause issues. Seems easier to just take it off (2 mins) and lay it under it. This isnt my long term solution (long bed is). I'll play it safe...

why do you not want it on the tailgate. Park her straight, tailgate down, if you are worried get the 150 dollar tailgate reinforcement from relentless fab.

Sorry but no way possible to fit your bike and close the tailgate with a short bed. Remove the tailgate or bungy cord it part way closed with the bike angled.

I'm going to try loading it tomorrow as it is in the pic. If I can get my bike close to him, with the tailgate removed, I wont have any clearance issues with the trailer. I'll post a pic

He can't lay his tailgate down because it hits his trailer.

Sorry I read it wrong and thought you wanted to fit the bike and close the tailgate. If you load angled like that make sure and strap the rear wheel so it doesn't bounced around and end up falling off the back.

It will be a very close fit, I was in the same situation with a dirtbike and had to move it in a similar fashion by leaving the tailgate unlatched and hooking two tie downs all the way down to the hitch and then hooking them to the back floor d hooks, and also to the side rails just for extra security. Worked flawlessly, if you pull the straps tight enough u don't have to worry about them being on the paint of your tailgate.

    Related question:

I have a regular cab, 6' long bed, 2wd. If I were to load a bike or four wheeler into the bed is it safe to lower the tailgate, back the truck up to a small hill and roll the bike over the tailgate?

I am concerned about bending the tailgate when rolling on top of it with the 500+lb bike...
    Thanks

With a long bed you might be able to get the bike in on the diagonal. Definitely not with the short bed. There's not much room, maybe an inch between the back of the rear wheel and the tailgate/corner of the bed.

I load my dirt bike all the time on the diag.

And I've loaded my ~490 lb KTM 950 adventure without a problem with the tailgate even with me standing on the tailgate too and I weigh a good 263 lbs.

I've seen a guy pull the TG, but park the bike ontop of a 2x12 oak board cut to fit tight into the front corner of the bed and hung over the back the extra few inches long enough he needed to support the bike. The 2x12 had another 2x3 running down each side to make a channel for the tires.
All wood screwed and gorilla glued.
Not sure if you can picture what I mean but cargo strapped down it was rock solid.

    Something like this.

Is there a reason you need to take the tailgate with you? I would put it in the trailer or leave it at home vs having it flop around in the bed with the bike.

Having something holding the tailgate at an angle would add the possibility of it coming off at the hinge which would be bad times.

I'm curious what would make you think that loading the bike kitty cornered would be a problem? Are you worried it's going to fall over if you need to slam on the brakes? If you strap it well it will be fine.

Ride the bike and let your wife drive the truck? Seems like a good excuse to me.

I've had my Ducati and my CBR's (1000rr&600rr)in the back of the truck resting on the tailgate. no issues.

I normally load with 2 friends and myself. It's a struggle with no ramp, but those things are treacherous. PLUS, a 4th or more people end up in the way.

    DCSB

Also OP, Looking in the bed of the posted pic. It was for sure an SB.

Glad you got it sorted out though.

I've done it tons of times on the tail gate

My need now is that I can't have it hang off due to my trailer.
