    Out of curiosity...
Living in Minnesota I have to start my truck at least 10 mins prior to driving during our frigid months. And since the security system does not allow me to lock the doors while the key is in the ignition, I was wondering if installing a remote start would alleviate this problem. I've been looking at a Vipor two-way remote start system (just the remote start, not the added security). Are there more add-ons I need to worry about in order for this system to work? I want to be able to warm my truck without worrying someone's going to take off in it.

I will let you know what I do. You can lock the doors with the engine running and the key in the ignition. You have to use your other key, put it in the doorlock and turn it and it will lock all the doors. Another thing I did was go to Lowes and have an unchipped key made(costs less than 5 bucks and will lock and unlock your doors) so you don't have to carry both of your chipped keys all the time. Hope this helps you out.

    None yet.
I had a Viper in my Mitsubishi RVR. The issue was due to the chip I had to get a another key programmed so that the chip could be put into a chip reader under the dash. When the remote start engaged the computer was tricked into thinking a key was in the ignition. This was an added expense. Maybe $35 plus the key. Not sure about Toyotas but I will find out in a couple of weeks when I get another viper installed. I would get the two way security and starter. It has functions like a thermometer so you can see what the temp is inside your car. Also if someone knocks into the bumper you can run out and yell at them. I found it quite handy living in a big city.

I have a Viper 2 way on my TRD. Works great, can defrost windows and still keeps doors locked and a must have here. Can even keep truck running, take out the key, lock doors, while going in to Tim Hortons to get a coffee and jelly donut.

This, I have the Viper and use it in Mn. all the time in the winter. My truck is only 1 year old and this morning the battery wouldn't kick it over so warming up the gf subaru now to try and jump start it, grhhh.... Looking to see if I should just upgrade the damn battery last year was rough on it as cold as it was.

So damn jealous- no Tim Hortons around here. Now I really feel the need for some Canadian Crack!

So I just got the Compustar one way system put in yesterday. It's great except, if you leave your light switch in the on position when you turn the truck off the lights won't flash. Guess I'll just stop being lazy about the lights. Until I fugure out how to bypass the relay.

I just put a Viper 5806V two-way system with Smart Start in last week. It gives me full factory integration plus remote start and security. Yes, you can leave the doors locked while you start the engine. It's a few hundred bucks and if you've never done car security before, I highly recommend you let the pros install it. It took me 4 hours and I have worked in car audio and security for 10 years.

I had a system installed in my wife's Camry recently, it was made by Viper, the brand escapes me right now, Allegra or something like that, a Viper brand.

There is a separate add on box that goes under the dash, in fact two versions of it. The $50 version allows you to put your valet key in it permanently and it gets screwed together and hidden away. When you press your remote start button, this box reads your key and allows the vehicle to start. Version 2, the $100 version, allows you to scan your key and it records the security info. Each time you start remotely, this box simulates your key being in the truck. The lights are connected, the brake pedal shuts the unit down, and the doors stay locked when it's running.

I'm happy with the unit, it has worked very well. The range of the new units are much better than the ones that I had 10 years ago.

I have Crimestopper SP-502 Remote starter and Security installed about 15 months ago. 2-way remote is AWESOME. It tells me if the car is running, is the door locked/unlocked, is siren going off, how long the engine has been run (by the remote starter). Range is good as well. I can start the car (without seeing it from inside the company) from 300+ yards away....

Costs about $100 from Amazon + $125 installation fees = awesome.

Do some of the Tacomas come with a factory security system? Mine's a 2012 SR5 Prerunner, DCSB if that helps.

    Thanks!

No Tacoma's come from the factory with it, it is a dealer installed option.
