True, but that's why I dug out the flannel underwear this weekend. No frost on the manly vegetables.

    :jellydance:

Fuck. I need to stop eating citrus for a couple of days. Just went to the bathroom and it felt like I was peeing battery acid.

    Damn You, Billy!

And Damn you too, Puggles. Our talk about ammo prices yesterday got me so fired up that I looked up Mosins in the local gun rag and I'm going to look at/test fire/possibly buy one on Sunday.

Once you buy one, let me know so I can give you all sorts of great ways to spend a bunch of money on your 'cheap' rifle. I bought the Archangel stock and Timney trigger for mine. It's a sweet shooter now!

Lol. The one I'm looking at on Sunday has a stock that looks like it's brand-new. He's asking $150, which is a little steeper than I've seen them (I've also seen them for very much more), but it does look to be in excellent condition.
Also, not sure if you've been on slickguns.com lately or not, but they've got a link to the Sportsman's Guide for 440 rounds of 7.62X54r at $95 ($91 for members) with free shipping.

Can't have ammo shipped to MA due to our lovely AG... I'm stuck with local pricing. Best I've found around here is $125 for 440.

I would like to pick up an M44 Mosin at some point. I want a flame thrower! Just make sure the one you get isn't one of the cheap Chinese T53s. I paid $160 for mine but it was from a local shop and I was able to look it over ahead of time, make sure all the numbers matched and came with all the original accessories.

    Ah, that's right...
    Neener neener, then, I guess.

Yeah, I know a little about the Mosins; enough to know to look for the star with an arrow or the triangle with an arrow to see if it was made in Tula or Ishveck (or however you spell it) or in China. Plus to match the serial #'s, check for counterboring, worn rifling at the muzzle, etc. Somebody had mentioned something about a hexagonal or round receiver, but the reading I've done on them says that it doesn't affect accuracy either way.
Anything else I should be on the lookout for other than the usual rifle things like smooth bolt and trigger, functional safety, etc?

There is no safety, smooth bolt would be wonderful but these rifles require the operator to not be shy. Mine slides smooth but locking in a round I usually slap the bolt down. If you find a hex receiver in good shape at a good price, they are more desirable and generally a bit more expensive. I do not believe there is any difference in functionality or improved accuracy but I'm not an expert and didn't get too far into the reasons they are more money. The trigger will have miles of travel and a heavy pull. Everything else is just like any other rifle, check matching numbers, etc. It should come with an olive green sling, bayonet, oil tin, pouch of tools and a leather pouch to hold the tools and oil. Those were the original accessories and although they're not overly valuable or useful, it could be a bargaining chip if it doesn't come with them.

I've heard they've got a pretty stiff lockup. I'd be looking for a smooth travel more than anything else.
I didn't realize they didn't have a manual safety, though. Meh. Not a deal breaker.

    Tee hee hee.

How about you, Bill? Any ideas on what I should look out for with an antique Russkie Rifle?

Pugga- I did some researching online and it says that the Mosins do have a manual safety; apparently you pull the cocking knob back and rotate it 45 degrees to set the safety. Is this a feature that only a few of them had or something? Maybe the later models?

No, that just manually sets the bolt back, I guess i meant there is no selectable safety. The Timney trigger adds a selectable safety like you'd find on a modern rifle. The feature you mentioned is a pain in the dick, not really what I'd call a safety (it's easier to cycle the bolt back)
