We asked Toyota public relations the question. Our PR rep contacted Toyota employees who are still at the show, and they confirmed that a manual will still be offered with the 4-cylinder engine and that it will be a 5-speed. Still, in the confusion of the show and on short notice we were not satisfied.
We contacted our go-to truck expert, Tom Esterdahl. Tim was present at the reveal, and he spoke directly to high-level Toyota engineers. He specifically asked these Toyota employees if a manual would be offered across the line and the reply was an emphatic "yes." - See more at: http://www.torquenews.com/1083/2016...r-combination-questioned#sthash.ad5SFUUT.dpuf

    It's not performance built.

    I don't see why it needs a 6-speed...

I do like the 2.7 5 speed manual myself.

If I recall correctly the 2.7 auto is a 4 speed currently so the news of a 6 speed is an upgrade there.

Five speed manual mates perfectly to the 2.7.

That is a proven, reliable, simple and economical choice which is all anyone should ask .

For the automatic, selecting the same six speed automatic that the v6 uses for improved fuel economy also makes sense.

    Score one for Toyota engineering.

You seemed pretty flustered it didnt have extra gears to make it a new truck...explain why you need extra gears in a sub 200 hp motor when the current one does its job?

How about fuel economy? I currently have a 2.7 4x4 5sp and just barely push mpg values above the 6 cyl auto. Look on Fuelly and I'm not the only one. I drive very conservative.

I bought this engine / tranny choice because it was more economical plus better mpg. If what Toyota is saying is true then the new 6cyl with 6sp transmission will get better fuel economy than the 4 cyl / 5 sp combo. If that's true then I think 4 cyl sales will drop from current levels.

    See post above.

Plus that argument is horrible. You can easily expand it to a multitude of situations like why buy a cell phone while your land line from 15 years ago does the job?

I think the current 5 speed is OK, I mean this thing is dog slow to begin with so it's not like I can't easily keep it in the right gear now.

I do think the gearing could change for the better; I'd like to see first gear lower to make it better for towing on non 4X4's. The current version sucks for getting started up a boat ramp - it's geared way too high IMO. Also I think the final drive could be geared better for highway economy.

That being said, I don't think toy will change squat on the 4cyl manual. There is simply no money/volume there.

    I bet it wouldn't help.

Autos with a torque converter benefit from more gears from an MPG perspective because they use a torque converter.

But with a manual, every shift is clutch in, wind down, shift, clutch out.

Technology has brought us into a new age in terms of drivetrain design.

It used to be that for best performance and best gas mileage, you would choose a manual transmission. You only picked an automatic for convenience.

Now, automatics win on both those counts.

The only reason to pick a stickshift now is for lower up front cost, or simply because you want one for "old school" reasons. Like me. :D

Yes I understand that, perhaps we are mixing up our messages.

What I'm saying right now for the Tacoma - getting a 4 cyl with a 5 sp gives the best mpg regardless if you get a 4x2 or 4x4 as compared to any of the 6cyl models (manual or automatic).

With the 2016 I think that will be the opposite and the 4cyl (with the manual or auto) will get worst mpgs than the new V6 with new 6sp manual/auto transmissions. At that point even more people will spend the extra $ to get the V6. Unless they do something to tweak the current 4 cyl and accompanying transmission.

You don't think the 4 cyl 6sp auto will get the best MPGs?

    That's my bet.

Yes, maybe but wasn't the subject of the thread the 5 sp manual?
