As title states, I've been lurking for sometime now, maybe a year or so. Sold my z71 about 2 years ago to buy wife a new car, and now about December or so I will be ready to buy another truck. I've looked around and studied a bit buy want to ask as I may have missed something. I plan on buying a new taco (I know we're still in their infancy, with no parts and all that and somewhat basing it of the 2nd gen), my question is this. I plan on taking the overland/expo route, which means ARBs, small OME lift. Would it makes as much sense to get an sr5 4x4 since I'm going to replace suspension and locker anyway, or should I buy the TRD. I know the 3rd Gen is suppose to have CRAWL but honestly I probably wouldn't use it, is there anything else besides elocker and tuned suspension that you get besides stickers?

Yes this is all somewhat moot but like I said essentially only posted here as I'll buy a new one.

You could save yourself some money and buy SR5. That's what I would do/did.
You get better seats though and color matched everything... I heard the seats are worth it. I don't mind my seats and couldn't really tell a big difference in a limited I sat in. If you're going to change everything including locker, I don't see why you would buy the TRD
    Up to you OP

That's what I was thinking, I could really use the money I'd save from buying a trd to put in an SR5 and make it better than one, just wasn't sure of I missed something that came with the package or not.

Hey OP. First, welcome to TW.

Second, that's a really good opening thread question. It really classes us the third gen section and keeps us from arguing phantom mileage or serving as a place for the diesel heads to moan.

I think teneighty is on the right track. I'm looking forward to hearing other chime in now.

If you're set on a 2016....I would wait before making any decisions. Wait until you get hard core facts about the 2016 and what packages it has to offer. DRIVE the truck first. I've never heard of this 'crawl ratio' (as you mention). If Toyota had the balls to put a specialized transfer case in the 2016's - I think majority of the folks on this forum would fall off their chairs in disbelief!

    Right now...EVERYTHING is a rumor.

Something else to think about...... Have you thought about getting a 2015??
Reason I say that is.....You have a large selection of aftermarket products to chose from because the 2nd gen has been around so long. If you go with a 2016....you might be waiting a while for the aftermarket companies to catch up and scramble to get stuff out there.

If you don't plan on re-gearing..... GET THE TRD.

I think he's referring to the crawl selector switch (1-5mph)

And good point on the aftermarket parts!

Well there are always the TRD skid plates. Not that they are worth that much money, but I assume the new TRD OR will still have them.

Sounds like OP will be adding full skids anyway for offroading? The factory TRD is just a pretty add on.

Yeah a 15 would probably be okay but I like the looks of the new body and a new 6spd manual. Yeah full skids or at least in the important places for sure and some sliders.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
We don't know anything about the new 6spd manual except that there is one.

other than that hell yeah have at it :)

+3. As a recent newbie myself, one thing that became very evident to me right off the bat is that there's a lot of immature B.S. & overall derp tolerated on this forum. Not sure if it's because a large % of young buyers are in this market or what it is, but its not a overly welcoming environment much of the time.

That said, welcome OP! Good luck on your decision & FWIW I'd think an SR5 might be a good fit for your situation.
