OZ, in lieu of blocking up the rack, why not add to the top of the rack. I made a couple small cross bars to slide steel over so I wouldn't mar the rails. These could easily be made to go clear across the rack.

I think that would take away from the functionality of the T slots in the crossbars

I'm considering whether I could lower the cap rack somehow

If you want I can build you a custom one that the side plates are taller on so the crossbars would be taller but not the standoffs. No sense in going through too much hassle when I can get you a clean strong solution. I just would need some extra lead time from you to get it cut.

would be a custom mount to do a toprac to my existing rack feet too , problem remains

The HD rails have slots on the bottom.

HD crossbars do, standard don't. Although there isn't much space under the rack for items. Only about an inch at the tightest point which limits the type of table you put under there.

So Zach , I posted this question about 40 pages back , just revisiting it as I try to figure put my options

Are you still limited to doing the longbed cap rack rails in steel ?

Nope. Long bed is now aluminum as well. The new shop I am using is much more talented and although they mentioned seeing the same issue on some jobs my parts are not affected due to the size of sheet they are using. Plus they are much better at using their equipment.

    Awesome

I'm trying to decide how I want to do my cap rack , and that would dictate whether I could get your standard height cab rack or whether I would need it a custom height

How do you approach mounting the cap racks on a set up like mine that just has the 4 feet ?

FWIW the bases for the feet are just inside the dimensions of the cab rubbers

ie outside to outside of the cap feet is essentially the same measurement as inside to inside of the cab rubber strips

I would like the cap and cab rails to line up width-wise as well as height-wise and therein lies my dilemma

Sounds like either way I would likely have to do a custom rack for you. My topracs aren't likely to line up with the mounting points that your crossbars on the topper are currently mounted to. I would have to readjust the toprac to fit those and then possible add some more mounting points in the middle to reinforce it. Unless you were to install some tracks then it would be another story. Either way though you are looking at drilling some holes in your shell.

If it were me I would probably leave the bars on your shell now to save the need to drill or modify anything and just do the custom height cabrac. Totally up to you though.
