    Tow package from factory
Hi all! I’ve got a question. I use my 2012 Tacoma TRD off-road every now and then for working on hauling away tree debris. I am currently borrowing my father-in-law’s 6 1/2 x 16‘ non-dump trailer for this work. I’d much rather not pay dump fees and be able to use my tow behind chipper instead, Plus the dump closes early! My solution would be to buy a small double axle dump trailer that weighs about 1700 pounds, and double haul it with my chipper, which I hear is called triple hauling. I’m trying to find information about the legality of this. I heard that in California I am only allowed to do this if my trailer is a gooseneck. Obviously this will not work if I have my Tacoma. I don’t use it for a work truck all the time, so I don’t want to modify the truck. I have it set up for hauling my camp trailer, 3500 pounds. I also have airbags installed. The truck can haul 6500 pounds, so I’m thinking that a chipper ~1500 lbs + the dump trailer ~1700 lbs would still leave me 3000+ pounds to haul in chips. Chips are way easier to get rid of than brush at the dump. Any experience to share? Also I can’t seem to find definitive information on hauling in California, so who should I ask? CHP? Thanks in advance.

    Don't

No clue as to Cali regulations but its probably not a good idea to pull to trailers at once with a Tacoma.

Weight is weight whether there is 1 trailer or 2.

edit: the information I found on Google was incorrect so I removed it.

How often are you doing this? If it’s not very often just have a buddy tow one and you tow the other?

I guess it's legal. Also those wood chips probably get heavy quick. Being a 2nd gen will probably help in this case. If it's legal and the OP can do it more power to him.

Also in for pics. Are you working alone? Wouldn’t it just be easier to have someone else tow the chipper?

If California isn't taxing it, it probably means it's illegal.

I believe this would be legal (provided he's under 65' and not overweight). You do need a special endorsement to tow triples and any trailer over 1,500lbs needs brakes.

Have you ever tried towing two trailers at all before? I wouldn't risk it with a Tacoma. Too small for my taste, rather use a 1 ton.

I see it rarely in California. I'm pretty sure you need a commercial Class A license to double tow. No tax and not illegal. I love California! :D And we can eat road kill starting this year! Whoop whoop!

Better get yourself a steel bumper and start driving those back roads!

What does MET look like? Lot of snow this year?

Maybe one of those Mad Max style bumpers to augment the food budget. What is MET?

Oh, ha, ha. I haven't been on MET this winter yet, but it has had some serious snow a couple of times. I would like to head to Uncle Toms Cabin before it gets too much snow.

I do work alone. A different license would put a damper on it! Most of my jobs are in town, guess I could do 2 trips, but that’d get old quick...I’d stay off the highways for sure, I’ve seen the crazy that happens at high speed towing!

Total length prob around 50ft. What’s OP? Ha.
