Aren’t you required to register your pickup as a commercial vehicle in CA of it has an open bed? Higher Reg fees?

    EDIT:
Found it, you pay a weight fee and get commercial plates in CA if you have an open bed pickup. Fuck that noise, can’t ever take off your canopy or camper to USE your truck without higher fees.

Yeah, I think so, it’s all pretty cheap.

AND a pickup can park in parking spots designated only for commercial vehicles. Probably not a big deal to most unless they live in a big city with limited parking but that helped me out countless times.

If you think backing one trailer up is fun, wait till you try backing up two. Based on many, many years of years of experience, most folks struggle with just one.

Every couple of months I go to a boat ramp at San Diego bay because it's absolutely hilarious to watch some of these people backing up their boat trailer.

Then they try to operate a boat they know nothing about. Lmao. I saw a guy with his family driving his boat out into the bay with the outdrive fully up hahahaha. Unfortunately he didn't understand English so my yelling to him did him no good. I've always wondered how quickly he figured it out, did he destroy the impeller? Did he destroy the engine? Yikes.

A friend of mine had a jet boat. He told his wife to go get the trailer. She didn’t want to, so he told her he would go get the trailer and she could drive the boat up to the trailer. He told her to just bump the throttle a little at a time, and back to neutral. He even showed her how. Well... she jammed the throttle wide open, shot the boat diagonally over the trailer, landed the boat in the mud beside the boat ramp, and the jet was shooting mud all the way over the trailer to the other side. He sold the boat after that. LOL

It's not legal. 21715 VC states you can only tow one vehicle in combination.

That section of the vehicle code is for a passenger vehicle. What about a commercial vehicle? Can a commercial vehicle triple tow in California? It used to be legal, but I don't know if it has changed.

Edit: Good info here on tractor trailer triples.....https://dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/legal-truck-access/exemption-lcv

hard to find the regulations- but this looked legit. Also saw that 65' max length. basically watch the weight- have brakes on the trailer over 1500lbs. But your total GVW for the truck and trailers can not exceed 10,000lbs.. Meaning not the actual weight but what the trailer is certified to hold, the Tacoma and what it can hold and the weight of the chipper can not exceed 10,000 lbs. So realize that you lose probably around 5500 to 6000 just for the truck. Everything else remaining will need to be 4,000 to 3,500lbs when holding max load. Makes some sense. Try calling the DMV/CHP and just reference like you are truck hauling a small RV trailer and small dingy boat- see if that all jives.

A real commercial vehicle can tow doubles or triples. A pickup is a "commercial" vehicle in California since the weight can vary but is not a commercial truck. A double or triple endorsement only appears with a Class A CDL (section 7 of the California Commercial Driver Guide covers doubles and triples; the commercial vehicle guides for all states will be basically the same since the same federal safety standards will apply).
