I pulled my glove box the other day to run USB cables and a Remote Gain pot for a new stereo build, and 'found' the cabin air filter location. Funny thing is, there wasn't a filter there; it was empty, dusty squirrel cage and all. I've had this truck since there were 13 miles on it, and am a little baffled.

Anyway, most of the filter replacements I've seen start fitment with the '06 models. Is it safe to assume that it would fit my '05 as well?

Awesome, thanks for that! I couldn't find it on my parts list, but then again there are a few replacement parts I need that aren't on the list...
I wonder why they left it out for the 05s??

...why would Toyota install the assembly and not put in the actual filter?

That's what I couldn't figure out. I just thought my baby was made on a Friday :) Which got me thinking, and worrying, about other, more important pieces on the vehicle, lol

Pulled the glove box on my '05 yesterday and saw no sign of a filter, just a dusty inlet and squirrel cage like the OP mentioned. I put a new filter in just for the heck of it. It will be interesting to see how much stuff it collects.

That happened to me too. 2005 Tacoma, but bought it in April 2013. I just went to auto zone and they gave a cabin air filter. Fit perfect.
