are you moving when your trying to engage it? it wont engage if you are sitting still..you only want to be still and in neutral to go into 4L. hope this helps. it also helps to be on dirt.
and if you havent used it much or at all its a little finiky. try driving forward and turning the wheel back and forth until it locks.

^^ If these suggestions do not work or after a couple of days of trying...its probably your actuator.
My truck did that on my 06 & the dealer had to replace that part to make it engage.
There are similiar threads on here by others on the same issue.

4wd will engage if you are sitting still and in neutral. That's the only way i've ever engaged mine. It takes a couple seconds though, the light blinks a few times then finally goes solid. I usually use mine for getting in and out of parking spaces so engaging while moving isn't really an option... if I could get moving I wouldn't need 4wd in the first place. Turning the wheel back and forth a little bit will help it engage sometimes.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
My 4wd HI will engage sitting still in drive.

Haven't tried in drive yet... I'm used to my other trucks that had that damn floor shifter where you had to be in neutral, sitting still and all the stars and moons had to align just right, then maybe it'd engage if the truck felt like it! Definitely liking the switch on the dash so far.

If you do it while rolling, I suggest getting completely off the gas. It will elimnate binding and pop right in. It will still work if you are on the gas, you just may hear a popping sound.

Are we talking about just 4WD hi? Or 4Lo?

You should be able to engage 4WD at any time. I can engage mine into 4WD hi while driving.

    4lo range is different.

turns out it was frozen, last time I used it it was around zero C and sloppy wet, now it has dropped to -21C. dealer told me to get it inside and thaw the truck out, after it warmed and I switched it back and forth a few times it kicked in.
