Anyone have issues with their stock e-locker rear axles?

Christmas Day, I went to back out of my driveway after just driving the truck the night before and it wouldn’t budge.. (so before when it was cold and wet outside I had the ebrake freeze up on me and once I got the truck wheels to roll it freed up of course) well Iassumed same issue, put the truck in 4 wheel backed up and crack, driver side rear wheel locked up, bunch of grinding and popping. Worst sound you never wanted to hear. Needless to say something gear or axle related happened in a bad way. Got the truck turned around in 4wd dragging that wheel then it would free up and drag again. Felt like the whole rear end was coming out. Anyway tearing into it tonight or tomorrow but not sure what to expect.... maybe someone else had same issue or insight on what I may be looking at fixing?..

    Thanks

My one rear tire would lock every so often found out it was the little spring on the bottom of the shoes. It fell off and the shoe would catch the drum and lock up. Must've ground the spring away because the spring was gone. I'm not saying that's your problem but Its worth a look.

I’m pretty sure I’m past the issue of a spring by the cracking sound the rear end made. Something was spinning inside the axle housing and it sounded pretty bad. This is the first time I’ve had an issue like this with an axle, so I’m curious as to what I find... we’ll see. I just didn’t know if anyone else has ever blown a ring and pinion or their spiders gears, or hell maybe I’m the first on these 2nd gens

yup first ever to break a R&P :D been through a few myself

my first thought is a seized drum...i had that happen when out in VT a few times. had to jack up the rear and do some convincing to get things to move again. ended up rebuilding the rear drums with new pads and springs. i was always worried about breaking a u-joint or shredding my gears, so i never tried to unseize them by force of the truck. on cold days i actually took a torch to the drums to free them up.

@Red Baron is referencing a situation where my e-locker did not disengage the sleeve. i had to lift the ass up to get the wheels off, remove the e-locker motor and slide the locker sleeve over manually. haven't had that happen since.

typically if you kill your R&P, the truck will still move, but will cause some deathly grinding and noises. you'll feel a badly damaged R&P. i've had it where it would catch the teeth just right and almost lock up my rear end.

my understanding is most spider gear failures will leave you stuck and spin the broken side. you'll have to lock up the rear end to get the side unbroken to move the truck.

@NYCO yeah I had to lock in the elocker after I already did the damage just to get the truck to move. It was almost like the wheels were chalked up. It wanted to move but wouldn’t, so I locked in the locker and once I broke free I took it out, put the truck in drive and reverse a couple times (my own stupidity) the wheel freed up enough to roll about 8-10 feet then lock up again, then roll and lock again. Every time it locked it felt like rear end was coming out of the truck. It was pretty disgusting.. so anyhow I’m pulling the third member tonight to see the damage I reckon...

Pull the drain plug and see if metal chunks fall out.

You're going to have to pull the axles to get the 3rd member out, so you'll be into the brakes before you get that far. Maybe you'll see something in the brakes.

How difficult is it to change the front R&P on these trucks? May regear for the 35s that are on it while I’m here and get my power back
