I bought this truck with 65k in 2010, now has 186k. It has been babied for the most part, especially in the maintenance department. I religiously waxed it every three months during the first five years of ownership, using mostly meguiars nxt2.0 wax, which I still think is a quality product. The paint on this truck is definitely not a quality product. Roof started peeling about two years ago and here it is today.
Body shop quoted me $1500+, yeah that’s not going to happen!!

Been pretty set on repainting it myself using duplicor perfect match paint that matched my color code of 209.

Now I’m thinking of just rhino lining it because it’s way easier.

    What does tacoma world think!?

BTW, this truck is quickly becoming my hunting fishing all around get around truck. No longer concerned with its appearance as I once was.

And it’s only surface rust...so far

Are you going to repaint it or leave it as is?

Repaint it,have it done right and the new paint will be better and thicker than the factory paint was. Also adds better resale down the road than Rhino lining it will.

Resale value is a concern, although I am currently thinking of owning this truck for another 3-5years.
It has been extremely reliable mechanically:
    One u joint
    Both front wheel bearings
All maintenance performed by me with quality oils/parts

Amazingly, that’s all that’s been done to it

Stripping it down to bare metal and covering it with black primer is also on my mind

Then have it repainted by a pro,if you like the truck that much ,do the right thing and repaint it.

If resale value is in question, paint it. Not many people want a rhino lined truck.

My experience with paint shops vs rhino shops. Paint shops are much more professional. Rhino shops are sketchy.

I would not pay a shop to apply the truck bed liner, you can buy a can for around $50, do a little prep and roll it on.

Wow, I’m on my 4th Toyota truck, since the early 80’s. This stuff is making me think my next truck won’t be a Toyota.

Naw, it's been a great truck other than this issue. I would buy again without any question.

The roof of my truck looked the exact same. It was a 2005. I repainted it with color matched paint. Stripped it, used chemicals and sanding to get the rust off, and put on a new base, color and clear.

I did the whole job myself so it wasn't near what the shop price you had quoted. If you plan to do the job yourself, just be ready to deal with the windshield, and 3rd brake light trim. I saw those as being the spots that might start to chip/peel first.

You're giving mixed messages here. You don't care how it looks, you want high resale, and don't want to spend $1500.

Not sure you can have it all.

I think its clearcoat failure. Probably some bad factory coatings. You see it around, especially the dark blue color. Some trucks are fine, some have failure and look like that.

This is the route I have been wanting to go.

    My plan:
Sand off all paint on roof with 240grit
    Clean area off
Using duplicolor self etching primer, apply to bare metal
Then a few coats of sandable primer
Sand with 400, finish with 600grit
    Apply primer sealer
Using duplicolor color perfect match black sand pearl paint, apply 3 coats or so
Finish the job with 3 or 4 coats of MAX 2K clear coat.

How did you do yours and how does it look? Did it last?

Also, not in my plan to lift up windshield to get the area underneath. Not expecting perfection
