    does your camera still come on when you put it in reverse or does it just come on from the switch?

    Rear camera anytime switch, 4x4 Illuminated Switch (from rcbs204) , rear view mirror lift bracket (from ImMrYo), 75 cent tailgate anti-theft. Technically not mods but give me a break I'm trying to fill space here... OEM Leather pkg, keyless unlock & ACC chime silence, BakFlip G2, Ultra Gauge EM, WeatherTech floor mats, OEM roof rack
    Still comes on when you shift into reverse.

    I wonder if using a double trow switch and adding an additional camera to the front of the truck would work?

    The switch would setup like this:
    Up= front camera always on
    Center= camera off for normal reversing use
    Down= rear camera always on

    The display cuts out after 5 minutes or so if I remember. So it wouldn't be a true auto-on. Also the hack so far is only relating to powering the display, not related to input source.

    I've been reading this thread trying to figure out why someone would want their backup camera on full-time.

    I guess you've answered it.

    Otherwise, it just seems like a distraction, and waste of space on the mirror, which should be used for its intended purpose.

    I thought about trying to switch the camera source so I could use the display for a camera on the back of the trailer. Always on would make sense there. Never got around to that though. Temporary on is handy for hitching regardless of being in reverse or not.

    So what happens if you turn the camera on with the switch and then you shift into reverse? does the camera stay on? also, is the wiring the exact same on the '12+ models? I'd like to do this on my '13.

    Yes, stays on. The switch controls the power to the circuit that turns the display on. Shifting to reverse has no affect if the switch is that position.

    I've been looking to do the exact same thing on my 2013, since I have a cap on the back with dark tint. I looked into other aftermarket units and most gave two wires to chose from either reverse or always on at the monitor power connector and just a single cable run to plug into the camera. At my tailgate wiring harness connector, I couldn't tell, without pulling all the wiring apart, whether the power was coming from the backup lights there or the camera was just was being fed from the front with the power. I will now check out your procedure, which seems less complex. I hate to drill holes in the plastic cover, so may look for alternatives there, as when time to trade or sell, I'd rather have it oem than modified. It was a great writeup, with clear pictures and easy enough for most to understand. Thank you very much for your contribution to a wonderful and informative web site.

    I completed the same project on my 2013, putting in the dash vs. the mirror. When opening up the mirror area, the space seemed too limited and more wires than the wiring diagram showed. When opening up the coin holder that conceals the fuses and wiring, it looked like a better bet. The wiring diagrams I had were different from my set up but not an issue being a Marine Engineer. A meter tells the story, so just connecting the wires was straight forward. I post this only as an offer to anyone with similar vehicle, to instruct on which wires to cut in the event they may not be electrically inclined and have a problem with the schematics. Many thanks to all who posted, that gave me the idea both for a mirror and dash installation.

    How does this work with the 2015's with nav units/tailgate cameras? Am I missing something with earlier models having something to do with rear view mirrors?

    I would like this mod for connecting my camper so when I pull forward, I don't lose the visual of the hitch. Amazed with the info on here. It has been very helpful.
